Lady Gaga "Alejandro"
So I saw the video for the first time. While I kinda like the song itself the video somewhat disturbs me in parts. Not so much the sexual stuff, than the military stuff. Is it really necessary to wear a bra with rifles (4:47)???

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SE4dFIGgD-A

So what do you think about the video?

1. Honest truth?
I thought it was one of the stupidest videos I've ever seen. Madonna on steroids. Been done before LG, you're about 20 years late with the homoerotic/religious/sacrilege themed choreographed crap. Did I mention I hate choreographed music videos (though I did like Bad Romance video?)

It wasn't clever or entertaining when they did it in the 80's and it's just worn out now.

Just my 2 cents.

5. LOL
love your 2 cents :)

I guess this video isn't made for us who remember the videos Madonna made in the 80s ;)

10. THANK you!
The first time I heard LG, I thought it was a new Madonna single. Nothing she has sung or video-ed or performed live has made me think she's anything besides Madonna lite. Yeah yeah she plays the piano. Big woop. She's still a retread, IMO.

2. She says it's a tribute to her gay fans
Edited on Mon Jul-19-10 09:05 AM by XemaSab
but I think it's borderline homophobic to equate gay sex with, like you said, a rough military fetish.

Oh, and the odd religious stuff.

19. That's she and her handlers ham handed attempt to deflect ANY criticism...
of her worn out shtick - "If you don't appreciate Gaga's genius, you must be a reactionary and provincial homophobe!"

4. LGG is a "logical" extension of Madonna.
She's very attractive and has a good voice. Madonna had a better background in dance.

I can't take either very seriously. Both support generic "popular" progressive roles, both lack any real depth.

It's entertainment, MHC. I'd rather see the anti-militarist/anti-"church" message than the misogyny and anti-social self-absorption of the Hip-Hop culture, but I don't think LGG is anymore likely to influence the social consciousness of our current teen generation than Britney Spears is.

8. Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing...
of any importance.

I like Gaga's voice, and she certainly has some talent putting a song together, but, like so many others, she is a bit more impressed with her efforts than is warranted.

(It would be nice to hear her just sing something straight for once.)

9. My feelings on her to a "T"
Edited on Mon Jul-19-10 10:44 AM by Amaril
In those rare moments when her true voice can be heard peeping thru, she reminds me a lot of Stevie Nicks, and I've always loved Stevie's voice.

she is a bit more impressed with her efforts than is warranted.

Mmmmm.......maybe change "a bit more" to "WAY more".

11. I think the basic point is to confuse people so they watch it over and over
looking for a message, trying to understand her, trying to analyze her allusions and her influences... Pretty soon the video has a Brazilian hits and she is richer and the thousands who depend on her for jobs remain employed.

When I was on the coast last weekend with my mother, I turned on the radio at one point and was listeing to an Usher song. She asked if I really liked that music, and when I shrugged and said "yeah, if that's the mood I'm in," she went on the same lament I've heard since the early 70s, about missing Pat Boone and Doris Day and music with lyrics she could understand. I imagine Lady Gaga's video would upset her. (And she's actually pretty accepting of the new, is very intelligent, and is a liberal--although I had to work hard to convert her).

Sometimes I believe the real message of all art is "It's our turn now, so just let us figure out what works for us."

22. if that was the intent, it failed miserably with me
I watched it once. That was enough.

Just don't care for it or the song.

Bad Romance, on the other hand, I've watched many times- I really like the song and the video.

24. yeah, but this thread has gotten a few more people to look at it once.
I'm with you, it didn't do much for me, and I liked Bad Romance a lot.

But Alejandro is the third or fourth single (I don't know if Teeth was a single) from an album of six or eight songs, and she's already on her next CD. For it to have any audience is pretty good. It's an average song, especially by her standards, so she puts together a derivative but startling video (for a derivative song that sounds more like ABBA than Madonna to me) to make everyone talk, and moves on to her newer projects. I think she did pretty well at getting attention for a song that's pretty much an afterthought.

If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with ridiculous marketing, as they (sort of) say. :)

and it just doesn't work, imo. It's more confusing than it is anything else.

26. Oh, Bubba, that was brilliant!!
There is a more mundane and immediate cultural reason for all of her imagery of slavery, sexuality, and empty-headedness, obviously. She's commenting on women's role in culture--an empty-headed sexual object, frequently the subject of violence. That's obvious in most of her songs and videos.

But I love that occult explanation. It shows how random facts can be hand-picked out of context and twisted into a suggestive theory without a shred of real evidence. It's how most conspiracy theories are formed. It's how many (not all) religious cultists create their message. It's how Republicans think. It's a perfect example of it all. Random cult symbols in a pop icon's legacy can't be derivative from the many occult images that have always fascinated rock audiences--it must be a devious mind-control experiment!

Thanks. That has made my day.
