If you were required to have dual citizenship, of what other country would you be a citizen?
Edited on Mon Jul-19-10 01:48 AM by Flaxbee
I think I might choose Finland or maybe Germany. Good social systems, good health care. Maybe Denmark.

I have loved visiting Italy, Russia, England, etc., but probably would not want to be a citizen.

I have also read that New Zealand is quite nice, but it's a wee bit far away for the Eurail jaunt to Venice or Nice or ...

How about you? :hi:

(Edited b/c it's late, and I'm tired, and I ranabunchofwordstogether)

5. I have met some extremely uptight Swiss folks, though.
CMW and Heidi and their excellent boy cat Ginger excepted, of course.

29. It's all relative, I guess
He is from the south of Germany originally and his wife is Austrian. Both of them hate it there. There may be some family issues involved though.

They seem like a nicer, friendlier version of the US. Any country in Scandinavia would be cool too.

10. Finland
An easy choice. All four grandparents were born in Finland and I have family and friends there.

And then there's this:
"...Finland is a leading example of the northern European view that a successful, competitive society should provide basic social services to all its citizens at affordable prices or at no cost at all. This isn't controversial in Finland; it is taken for granted. For a patriotic American like me, the Finns present a difficult challenge: If we Americans are so rich and so smart, why can't we treat our citizens as well as the Finns do?

Finns have one of the world's most generous systems of state-funded educational, medical and welfare services, from pregnancy to the end of life. They pay nothing for education at any level, including medical school or law school. Their medical care, which contributes to an infant mortality rate that is half of ours and a life expectancy greater than ours, costs relatively little. (Finns devote 7 percent of gross domestic product to health care; we spend 15 percent.) Finnish senior citizens are well cared for. Unemployment benefits are good and last, in one form or another, indefinitely..."

15. The country is multilingual
Most Finns are bilingual (Finnish and English), if not trilingual (or even more). Other than a few swear words and a couple of holiday greetings, I don't speak Finnish (thank you to the American school system that told my family, when I was in first grade, that I would be at an academic disadvantage if they continued to speak Finnish around me). The only place I've had difficulty carrying on a conversation has been deep in the Arctic Circle (Lapland) and that was in one restaurant.

23. kiitos!

I have spent several weeks in Helsinki and Porvoo; my husband lived in Porvoo for a while in the 90s.

I loooove Finland; if a project we're working on goes forward, my husband and I may move there for a year or so.

It is my understanding (could be wrong) that English is taught in all the Finnish schools from first grade through high school. Seems to me a person could also get by with Swedish (since it is the other national language) or even German language skills, from what I observed. Finnish is a bit daunting :)
