We had an earthquake in suburban Maryland this morning
3.6. Centered almost directly underneath where I've been dogsitting for my mother in Gaithersburg.
I thought it was just a truck going by. Thats kinda strong from this area...we usually get them in the 2 range.
Was that an earthquake? Yes
WASHINGTON - A 3.6 magnitude earthquake woke the Washington metro region Friday, rattling homes and startling people.
The U.S. Geological Survey says it happened at exactly 5:04:49 a.m. about 3 miles under the earth's surface.

Right after it happened calls from all around Maryland, Northern Virginia and as far away as West Virginia started lighting up the WTOP newsroom's phone lines.

"It was centered in the Germantown-Gaithersburg area," Randy Baldwin, a physicist with the U.S. Geological Survey's Earthquake Information Center tells WTOP.

I remember waking up to what I thought was a big truck passing by. Weird. I'd never experienced a quake until this year (when I was out in Arizona I felt the Mexicali quake on Easter Sunday) and no two in less than 6 months....
Yeah I know, no big deal for you Cali folk..but for here....Definitely startling...

8. He finally succeeded in summoning the GORN.
It sounded like a big book falling off the shelf. I went back to sleep.

2. It's strange how you can hear some earthquakes coming isn't it?
I live in California so I'm used to earthquakes. You might get some aftershocks although it is a minor quake.

I was awake and the cat with me on the bed and I looked at each other and we were like "What the hell?"

It was sort of comical.

These things just don't happen here. Too funny!! I've been in earthquakes in CA and Japan, but never expected this. Bizarre.

11. Actually I was going to suggest that she do just that
seeing as how Md. is no longer quake-safe, she might as well come out here and enjoy the good life with us! :loveya:

13. I think so
I was in Sac the day we had the small one near SJ, so missed that, but could have sworn I felt the sidewalk roll the day they had the fairly big one up by Eureka.

10. Not strong enough to be felt down there
the Boxed Wine Capital of the World(TM) is ninety or so miles south of the epicenter. :-)
