A missing colleague was found dead...
I work for a general contractor. The engineering firm, which designed what we're building, has a resident engineer on site and a couple of engineers working out of its Charlotte, NC, office. One of them, who was just here in Wilmington last week, is 28 years old, with a young daughter and another 5 weeks away.

He left home on Monday morning at 6:30 to go to work about 25 miles away. He never made it. He was found this morning, dead. We don't know many details yet, but we're all in shock. Apparently, he was found in a secluded area nowhere near his workplace, a place he would not have been otherwise.

He was a great engineer, so young and with so much promise, with a young family and a new baby on the way. What a shame. Our resident religious people are saying that's God's plan... WTF is that a plan, to take away a young man from his young wife and daughter, without having the chance to even see his second child being born? Sorry, I'm venting, but crap like that makes me mad.

If you know him, just know my thoughts (and all of us here) are with his family and colleagues.

Here is a blurb about his disappearance - there haven't been updates since:

1. That is so sad.
The world spins so fast,we don't seem to have time for little tragedies to register. Sorry to hear this.

"Our resident religious people are saying that's God's plan... "

That is such crap, I'm like you, I get totally disgusted with it.

16. It's a way of coping
It's total bullshit IMHO, but if it helps them get through, OK, but never say that to me.

3. bad things happen
and that is about as much as I know. Explaining tragedy is difficult. Coping with it is even more difficult. His family needs friends to stand by them now and even more importantly in the future. You have my condolences.

4. This is so heartbreaking,
and there is no rhyme or reason to such tragedy. It's a difficult situation, and it's going to be very challenging for his family to cope.

5. I'm sorry, and I hate that religious b.s. too.
The god they believe in is supposed to be "love" -- and it simultaneously does crap like this. What a stretch to believe in a being that is so obviously an asshole. Oh, I forgot ... "God" has a plan. Ours is not to question. Blah blah blah. Sometimes, it's good to vent.

7. People deal with their pain and fear in whatever way works for them.
Some people need an explanation that gives them a sense of power in their powerlessness, so they see it as part of a plan that they are a part of even if they can't control it. Just let them find their own answers, I guess.

Sorry for your colleague. Hang in there, let yourself grieve for him. It's easier.

9. His poor wife
She's got to be just destroyed by this. I'm a new widow myself, having lost my husband suddenly in a car accident but she has a child to care for and another one on the way. She must feel so alone and utterly bereft right now. My thoughts and prayers are with this poor family who have lost so much.

11. Oh, this is awful.
What a tragedy. Such a young man, with a young family. Blessings to his family and friends, and I hope that some answers can come to try and make peace with this.

Peace to you and your co-workers, as well. It's a terrible toll on a whole community when these things happen. Take care.
