1. indeed.com, careerbuilder, hotjobs.com
monster.com isn't as good as it was 6-8 years back, though.

5. Depending on what you're looking for
I temped with Legal Northwest and Boly Welch, two pretty good agencies in the Portland area. I also haunted Craigs List, registered with Monster, Jobdango and a couple of other resume sites. I didn't find the resume sites to be particularly helpful.

I also got online and registered for openings at the large employers that I thought might be able to utilize my skill set, including Providence Health System, Kaiser Permanente, Nike, and Legacy Health System. Then I started looking at the job description for every opening those places had, and submitted a resume for anything even remotely tied to my interests. My theory was that you never knew when someone might get my application and say, “This guy doesn’t look right for my department, but he could be just the thing over in John’s part of the office.” I also signed up with the State, City and County websites, registering for practically everything they’d offer in civil service openings.

When I finally got a job (which I've now been at for more than two years), it was almost like going on vacation, the intensity level went down so much.

8. Litigation Legal Secretary/Paralegal/Legal Assistant
Depending on the size of the firm, and the needs of the attorney, just about anything short of signing pleadings and appearing in court.

6. Get out in your community as much as possible
Edited on Tue Jul-13-10 05:14 PM by taterguy
There's life beyond the Internet.

Go out as often as possible and network in a nice way.

Don't be obnoxious about it but keep your ears open for opportunities.

A lot of employers make hiring decisions based on word of mouth from people they trust.

I got my dream job because my bike mechanic likes me.

So the more people you have actual, not cyber, relationships with, the better odds you'll have.

Unless you're a pain in the ass in real life.

Good luck.

Seriously.

9. Don't just focus on job search engines, they are useful but not all jobs are
listed on them, also check out company websites.

last job (2 years ago) advertised in the paper. It was a tech job for a local government, and he NEVER saw it advertised on any of the tech job websites.

Also, check the websites for your local government(s) or airport authorities.

works where you want hired and kiss ass. If it's a Union job you want find a Union official and kiss ass. I am not trying to be a wise ass but most people I know got their jobs through marriage, a friend or relative. A good many of the ones that moved up on their jobs kissed the boss's or Union officials ass.

13.  Do you live near an Air Force Base
if you do, this site contains a listing of civil job openings at the different bases across the nation and outside the US. You actually apply for the positions on line at the site.
