Has anybody here ridden the rails?
I ran across an interesting website about a adventurous form of leisure travel, hopping freight trains. The site covers information on how to do it, where to do it, and covers some of the benefits and hazards.

4. Trailers for sale or rent
Rooms to let, fifty cents
No phone, no pool, no pets
I ain't got no cigarettes
Ah, but two hours of pushin' broom
Buys an eight by twelve four-bit room
I'm a man of means by no means
King of the road

Third boxcar, midnight train
Destination Bangor, Maine
Old worn out suit and shoes
I don't pay no union dues
I smoke old stogies I have found
Short, but not too big around
I'm a man of means by no means
King of the road

5. My understanding is that if you could carve a place on a high security prison yard..
You would get along reasonable well as a latter day hobo. Umm, no thanks.

6. It's not as easy as it used to be
what with the decline of the boxcar and the advent of the container.

I do know people who have done it by climbing into pickup beds on open autoracks.

11. Railroad rights of way and yards are private property, plus, it's a great way to lose a leg or two.

Despite being intensive safety-oriented workplaces, people who are TRAINED to get on and off moving equipment are injured every year. Don't do it. It's a horrible, irresponsible, illegal, unsafe idea. It's like saying 'let's go play in an oil refinery'.

Watch 'Emperor of the North Pole' instead :D

Lee Marvin at his best, and Ernest Borgnine at his most evil.

14. No, but I've
been run out of town on a rail...

Just kidding.

I was wondering about that a week or so ago, as I watched a very long train pass by. I was wondering how that would be implemented. I don't recall seeing an open boxcar (except in the PeeWee Herman movie).
