A commonsense (and maybe odd) gift that is a sure winner for a newlywed couple

Patoid's thread reminded me of my tried & true wedding gift.(usually given as a supplement to THE gift)

two sturdy clothes baskets
assorted spices (those things cost a bunch to start out)
a good mop & bucket
a good broom
a couple of dustpans
some nice wastebaskets
a window squeegee
stick-on puck lights
a package of bar-towels
compact fluorescent light bulbs
a funnel
a hand-crank can opener
a stainless veggie peeler
& whatever grabs my fancy

If I know the couple really well, I'll add laundry soap & cleaning supplies.

I can still remember the "first grocery store trip" as a newlywed.. that oddball stuff about cleaned us out, and it's all stuff you need.

Of course this does not work these days for the couple that's been living together for years

Everyone wants to give the bride & groom the fancy pretty stuff (which probably never gets used). We've been married 40 years, and there are still wedding gifts (unused) boxed up in storage. A sterling silver compote? really?..we've got one:)

For baby showers, I'm the one who gave the size 3T denim coveralls & the potty-training pants & the wooden tooth-brushing stool:) Everyone brings the cute newborn stuff that never wears out (because the baby grows too fast to wear much of it), and by the time the kid's a toddler, no one's giving much of anything:)
