Which is the one Bible phrase people seem to forget about?
1 Timothy 6:10 comes to my mind.

"Money is the root of all evil", or in some versions (isn't non-conformity grand when it comes to religions that say "obey ME only and nobody else or I shalleth turn you into salt!") it says "The love of money is the root of all evil".

Especially in the wealthier areas of the country. No preise or pastor or anybody in the cloth would dare mention that chapter, unless they were to bypass the actual phrase or pervert it into a different meaning (methinks somebody already had when they included the prefix "the love of"...)

What say you?

40. eye for eye, tooth for tooth
that is so old testament

jesus said "you have heard it said, 'an eye for an eye', but i say unto you, that whosoever shall smote thee on the right cheek, turn to him the other also." or something very near to that - check out matthew. i once had verse and number in my memory, but that was a long time ago when i thought quoting scripture back would be effective... ;-)

a lot of people miss that "turn the other cheek" bit.

But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you."

Luk 20:22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or no?
Luk 20:23 But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them, Why tempt ye me?
Luk 20:24 Shew me a penny. Whose image and superscription hath it? They answered and said, Caesar's.
Luk 20:25 And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.

Rom 13:7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute ; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
Rom 13:8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.

15. Acts 17
"The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by hands. And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything, because he himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. From one man he made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. 'For in him we live and move and have our being.' As some of your own poets have said, 'We are his offspring.'

Also Galatians 3:28
"There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus."

There is no legitimate reason for racially segregated churches. PERIOD.

19. Reconstructionists/Dominionists seem to forget Romans 12:2
"Be ye not of this world"
They want to remake the world the way they want it. Verse 3 applies pretty well to them, too.

Romans 12
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Matthew 5:38 and 39:

"Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:

But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also."

Actually meant to get ready to fight not to remain pacifistic, and that the whole turn the other cheek thing was a reference to getting into a fighting stance.

30. I learned something interesting about that from my minister.
He said that in those times, it was ok to hit someone on one cheek, but illegal to hit the person on the other cheek. (Don't ask me why; they had some pretty weird rules back then.) So, if this is true, then by saying to turn the other cheek, Jesus was actually being subversive (in the sense that the person hitting the other cheek would get arrested for doing so).

There are just so many layers in the Bible; a person would probably have to study it for years to learn all the nuances.

22. MONEY
I believe the problem is not the money, but the way we have been brought up to perceive value... It is our perceptions of money, and greed that are evil. Our capitalist values do not support sustainability or equality, but oppression of the masses. It is our choice to stay stuck as wage slaves and let the powerful make all the money and decisions. It is our lack of passion about our own lives and the influence of the media that perpetuates a culture of over worked consumers. It is up to us to help America reach its highest potential. I believe if we began to work together towards sustainable change on a global level, rather than striving for success as individuals, we would move forward together much faster. It is no wonder the verse is not discussed in this land of materialism.

46. You know,. you've taken those so far out of context,
it's silly.

They are both laments, though Isaiah is a prophetic lament as opposed to a general lament like the Psalm (and not that "prophetic" does not mean it is some super accurate predicion of the future - prophetic never means that, a sadly common misunderstanding people have).

They are not commandments of what people SHOULD do, they are NOT God telling people that "this is what you must do!"

Cripes, if you're gonna try to show that the Bible is "stupid" at least do some fershlugginer research into the stuff you're quoting so you don't take it so wildly out of context.

(And it's Pslam 137:9, BTW, but that's a minor, not very relevant point)

34. For those who think that non-Christians are condemned:
Romans 2:10 (King James version)
but glory, honor, and peace, to every man that worketh good; to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
11
for there is no respect of persons with God.
12
¶ For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law; and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
13
(for not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
14
For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
15
which show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)

So if a fundamentalist tells you you're going to hell because you don't follow his brand of religion, toss this passage at him.
