2. It's very good, but I wish he'd had more time to go into the

question of "why" as in "why do black women want straight hair?"

I just finished reading Medical Apartheid by Harriet Washington and she describes how the medical establishment for years thought that any departure from Anglo-Saxon standards was a sign of inferiority.It's a more respectable racism; "I don't hate you, you just can't help being inferior."

I'm having a problem saying exactly what I mean, but it's something like somewhere along the lines the everyone at one time absorbed the message that the whiter you looked, the better. It's deeper than simple aesthetics.

4. I agree. I love very curly hair and many of the styles only African Americans can do. I have

curly hair but it isn't nearly curly enough.
