Well SHIT...scope came back inconclusive....
even the prior damage is not as evident.

They don't know why I have this horrible pain that reaches 25 on a scale of 1-10

Follow up with the doc in 2 weeks.

I went in with the mind set of how many inches of colon to lose and now we are back to  don't know what is wrong

GOD DAMN IT ALL TO HELL

1. Did your doc do a CT scan to look at the outside of the colon...
and the surrounding organs?

I am sorry to hear about your dilemma.

5. I have some experience with gastoenterologists not having
an effing clue what's going on with my gut, but pursuing it on my own and eliminating pain. Don't know your story, but I advise you to do a bit of your own research, if you haven't already. Don't give up.

got major scary this last year...then thought we had it figured out, seemed to be on the right track and today's scope was to measure the inches of colon that was going to be taken off and now we are really back to

7. It sounds scary
and it sounds confusing. I hope it's good news that you don't need any colon removed, if that's what you've learned. I have learned that even the most dilligent physicians are not always in touch with the latest advances. You are probably as capable of doing research related to your situation as anybody. I'm sorry you are going through it, though. Living with pain is very demoralizing.

10. For what it's worth......
I sincerely hope you and your doctors can get to the bottom of this (er sorry... no pun intended) and you feel better.

I don't wish any ill on anybody here. Not even the MD-LLC'ers.

You and I pray to the same dude, though He hasn't returned many of my calls. I'll keep you in my prayers.

13. Ulcerative colitis? Crohn's disease?
Edited on Tue Jun-29-10 01:03 AM by begin_within
Both are painful. I would get a new GI doctor and get a real diagnosis. Both UC and Crohn's come and go in "flare ups" that can be cripplingly painful. They are autoimmune disorders. Western medicine uses prednisone to suppress the immune system and that relieves the inflammation and pain, but prednisone has a lot of nasty side effects and can also cause dependency. The hydrocortisone enemas are much safer because they are topical rather than systemic and can provide localized relief. The drug Asacol (mesalamine) is used as a long-term preventive therapy, and fortunately the patent on it expired so it is now much cheaper than it used to be. It is simply a relative of aspirin and it is in enteric-coated tablets which stay whole until they reach the colon then release the medication to the colon. It is also available as an enema called Rowasa or suppositories called Canasa. In India, practitioners of Ayurvedic medicine use an herb called Boswellia serrata to treat these conditions, and reports indicate Boswelli is effective. I would find a gastroenterologist who will be able to give you a proper diagnosis and choose an effective course of treatment. There's no reason for you to suffer the pain any longer.

14. Crohn's is what they have been treating with infusions for the last 6 months
Edited on Tue Jun-29-10 01:15 AM by demtenjeep
I had a severe in the hospital type flare up last week thus the scope today as I can't take a lot of the maintenance drugs as it causes other severe issues. We had planned on the scope today to measure and locate what needed to be cut out. Now we are back to "gee maybe it's this"

sigh...

16. Well I hope your pain goes away soon. You might look at
http://www.ccfa.org/

I think it's important to keep your digestive system as healthy as possible, including probiotics such as Activia or acidophilus milk, avoid greasy foods, some people have to avoid popcorn, nuts and seeds, especially people who suffer from diverticulitis. The Omega-3 supplements such as fish oil or flax seed oil are also thought to reduce inflammation in the body, and the herb boswellia has been examined as a treatment for both Crohn's and colitis. Your doctor should be the one to decide the best form of treatment, of course, but I would look around at all the possible methods and therapies to find out what works for you. Although the cause of Crohn's is still unknown, many scientists agree that it is the body's immune response to something foreign such as a bacteria or virus, but for some reason the immune system gets stuck in "on mode" even when the agent that triggered it is long gone. Anything you can do to keep your gastrointestinal system healthy and that will reduce inflammation, will help reduce or eliminate the pain.

17. Let me throw something in on that note.
My dad was diagnosed with diverticulitis back in the early 90's, after being in serious pain for a while, and fearing the worst. After the diagnosis, he was told to avoid seeds and nuts of any kind, including any kind of corn. Not just popcorn. Couldn't eat iceberg lettuce either, for some reason. He ate this limited diet for years but ironically it was seeds that saved him. Specifically flax seed. Grinds the shit up every day and mixes it in with his orange juice. I don't know how the Hell he drinks it like that, but it works. He's been able to eat nuts and berries and stuff again for several years now, and at the age of 79, has no digestive issues that I'm aware of.
