I smell like anal glands.

I just took my dog to have his anal glands expressed. I held him while they did it. Now, I smell like anal glands.

If you are unfamiliar with the smell, all you need to know is that it would knock a buzzard off a shit wagon.

It is also overpowering the smell of my CVS Generic cologne.

5. They are glands just inside the dog's anus...

located at the 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions (I think). They secrete a fluid for some biological purpose.

They sometimes become impacted and have to be expressed, or drained by someone with a lubricated finger.

You will know if your dog is having a problem if they start scooting their butt across the floor. :hi:

8. For the short, least gross explanation....

they're two little glands inside (sort of) the dog's anal sphincter. They generally secrete fluid onto the stool as it passes that assists in scent marking. (they make the poop smell unique to the dog). If they get clogged or backed up for some reason it gets really painful for the dog, and you have to, basically, squeeze them empty with your finger. The fluid, when you get it in a large quantity like that...the smell is almost indescribable if you haven't encountered it yourself. Something like a load of fish that went rancid while lying in a pile of their own shit. Maybe.

When you see dogs scooting across the carpet/ground, it's usually because they're anal glands are irritated and they're trying to "express" (read-empty) the glands on their own.

Let's just say it's her least favorite smell.

When a dog "scoots" it's trying to release the anal glands. I guess they can get infected if backed up for too long.
