I really don't mind being told what to do, by someone who knows what s/he is doing

Not everyday, not all the time, but I have no problem being told by others with more knowledge / experience / whatever what is the best thing to do in a particular situation. Don't bark orders at me, but if things have to get done fast, and you know what to do and how to do it, tell me.

But don't ever, ever, EVER tell me what I feel or believe.

There is someone in my life who says things like "you obviously feel this" or "you obviously believe that" or "you obviously don't like a, b, or c...." and it drives me almost round the bend, especially because I have said multiple times that I really don't like being told what I feel or think. And this person pretends like s/he can't understand the difference between being told "do this to get X result" vs. "you obviously don't want to do Y".

Is this anyone else's pet peeve? Am I nuts? Or is this a pretty common reaction for most humans who tend to at least want to believe they know their own feelings / thoughts / beliefs?

1. My dear Flaxbee...
I am completely in accord with you on this. I rely on my friends for their good advice, but like you, I cannot stand to be told what they think I'm feeling or believing.

You are NOT nuts!

I don't know how common this is, actually...

But there's at least two of us!

3. thanks, CalPeggy...
I was beginning to think I was just an oversensitive bitch. And as you said, if it's true, then at least there are two of us :D

Hope you're doing well! How's it all coming with MFA grad school? I know you had some classes to fill in before the MFA...

How far in advance are you booked?

Thanks, Skittles. Obviously not just a pet peeve of mine... sounds like one of yours, too.
