Now that KFC has added a bun to the Double Down, what ELSE should they add?

KFC is alerting fans today via e-mail about a new sandwich coming to restaurants on July 5.

In the message, KFC hints that the new menu item will cause almost as much buzz as the Double Down. Here’s what they said:

“The brand that created international buzz with the Double Down will make more menu news with a new sandwich this July. And, if you thought our sandwich without a bun was a hit, wait until you see what we’re doing with a bun.”

Of course, I’m intrigued. If you take a look at the picture, the sandwich looks like it is stuffed with bacon, cheese and possibly a layer of *mac ‘n cheese. Not sure. What do you see?

*4:20 p.m. update: KFC rep, Rick Maynard, tells me via email: “That is definitely NOT macaroni on the sandwich in the photo. It’s sauce. (He didn’t respond when I asked what specifically is in the sandwich.)

6:52 p.m. update: Maynard sent me this update on the sandwich: “It’s KFC’s new signature sandwich called the Doublicious. It combines a savory boneless chicken filet with a sweet Hawaiian Bread bun for a one-of-a-kind sweet and savory taste. The Original Recipe Doublicious includes an Original Recipe filet topped with bacon, Monterey Jack cheese and Colonel’s Sauce. The Grilled Doublicious is a grilled filet topped with Monterey Jack cheese, lettuce and honey mustard BBQ sauce The Original Recipe Doublicious includes an Original Recipe filet topped with bacon, Monterey Jack cheese and Colonel’s Sauce. The Grilled Doublicious is a grilled filet topped with Monterey Jack cheese, lettuce and honey mustard BBQ sauce.”
