Poll question: $3,600 found on highway returned to Pa. newlyweds : would you return it?
BRIDGEVILLE, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania man found an envelope stuffed with $3,600 and returned it to the newlyweds who lost it after their wedding reception.

David and Ashley Marasco, of Bridgeville, had mistakenly driven off with their wedding album on top of the trunk of their car Sunday. The money had been tucked inside.

Another motorist pointed out the album on the trunk, but the envelope had already fallen out.

Brennan Breene, also of Bridgeville, says he saw the envelope with cash sticking out Sunday in the middle of Washington Pike, a busy highway southwest of Pittsburgh. So, he stopped to pick it up.

He says he learned about the Maraco's misfortune Monday from local news websites, so he gave the cash to police to be returned.

Breene says he knew the money wasn't his.

1. I would...
We try and live by the karmic way of life. What goes around comes around, good vs bad etc. Sometime we feel we are honest to a fault, but I'd rather be that, than a lier, cheat or thief.

18. Add a couple of zeros, and the money ...
... must have fallen from a mobster's pocket.

Or a politician's.

But I repeat myself.

13. I'm not taking a poll, but seriously, if you'd keep the money, you're a
dishonest person. Where I come from, that's called stealing.

I hope that someone would do the same for me although carrying around that amount of cash isn't all that bright.

12. True story
I was working four jobs to save to go to school to become a programmer and one of them was as the odd job guy at a super market in Monsey, NY. On this particular day, I was assigned to rounding up the stray shopping carts in the parking lot. One of them had a small pouch in the little front holder that looked just like the pouch I used to hold my coupons. I took it in to the main desk and gave it to the girl that did customer service and told her someone left it in a cart. Later, as I was going to punch out,, she called me over and said "I can't believe you turned that in, I bet anyone else would have kept it". I thought to myself... WTF? Why would anyone keep coupons... but said to her "Why?". She then told me that it contained a little over 13k in cash. Honestly... I'm not sure what I would have done if I had looked inside before taking it inside.

14. I would turn it in. I'll admit that 1-2 percent of me would want to keep it but..
...thinking of the newly-married couple would melt anybody's heart.

15. I think that I would
If I know who the money belongs too, I think I'm gonna return it. I have to admit, it starts looking fuzzy to me if it happens to be in a wallet with Rush Limbaughs ID, on a "who needs this more, him or my favorite liberal charity" concept. I would not keep it for myself, though, even if I were to give into the temptation not to return money to a jerk.

If I do not have any way of knowing who's it was, I am much less solid on what I would do. I once found a $50 at a fence line, outside a homeless shelter I was helping my dad work at, when I was a kid. I got whupped pretty good, as well as having it confiscated and donated, because dad was convinced I stole it(from who, I wonder?). I still find that to have been idiotic on his part, as looking back, I would have learned a far greater lesson about charity, and likely had a much better association with giving money to those who need it more than myself, had I not been given unjustified punished as well as the fact of losing the "treasure" that I found. Purely owner-less found money, I think I would keep.

16. I've done something similar
in the past, when I found a MasterCard at the laundromat inside a washing machine. When I got home, I called the issuer and told them I had found it, and they called the husband on whose account it was drawn.

The lady hadn't even signed the card, so I could have just as easily done some majorly illegal things with it for a day or two, But I did not. I did think a guy essentially grabbing it, with a quick "thanks", could have been either nicer, or given me a small reward for returning it.

There were a couple of times when there was no ID at all on a wallet I picked up, and without any information, I claimed the cash inside. In one case, it was $40, and in the other, it was about $20 something.

17. A bank teller gave me an extra $100 bill once
I didn't realize it until I was miles away from the bank, but I still drove back and returned it. I don't want any money I didn't come by legitimately. She was kind of shocked that I came back. I suspect from her reaction that most people don't.

19. If I saw a news report that $3600 were lost by newlyweds
and I happened to come across an envelope with that amount in it, in the area where they lost it, you're darned tooting I would return it. I could use the money, I can't afford the karmic blowback if I did keep it.

I would not want to be resposible for sabotaging a new marriage. I'd be haunted by the theft for the rest of my life if I did not give it back.

25. I there was no 'buzz' on local news & internet about someone losing that much money..
then I'd tend to think it was ill-gotten (drug money, stolen.. etc), and would have turned it in to the police. In this case, there was some public announcement of the loss.

30. Of course I'd return it. And if there was no news article to guide me I'd try the police
or a relevant facility manager or whatever source seemed likely to get it back to the owners. However, I'd certainly get a receipt before handing it over to any of those authorities - if it's not claimed I want it.

Generally, I'll do a careful looking around for amounts up to $20, and I'll pocket it if the owner isn't obvious. Denominations above that (if I'd ever found one) would require the larger effort...

once it was substantially MORE than that amt, once it was less, but in both cases i was able to identify where it belonged and return the money

i have found cash with no way to know where it came from and kept the money but i think the most i ever found in that circumstance was a few hundred
