Oh what the hell. My dad bailed on us circa 1944. Maybe 1945. I dunno. Somewhere around there. I was 3 or 4 years old.
From my mom I never heard why. She never said a word against him.
In my late 50s, from an elder cousin who I'd recently become acquainted with, I learned why.
The short form is that he fell in love with someone else. He was stationed in Honolulu and she was a civilian employee in his office. So he came home on a furlough from the war and broke the bad news to my mom.
Shit happens. :-(
I've tried to be the father to my child that he never was to me. I think she would tell you that I did just a little bit better than he did.
