The Lounge is a fun place but other places on this site...DAMN. I just found myself getting sucked into throwing a tantrum over the snarky attitude surrounding a freaking Jimmy Buffett concert, for Chrissake. I can't take the smug sniping any more. Some of it is really malignant, and I don't need it. So, you guys be well, keep the duck kicked, and I hope to see you around the more positive progressive places on the 'net.

Love. Really.

Then come back, OK?

I was just thinking, last night, that I was glad to see a shrink here at DU! I guess you know healthy vs. unhealthy behavior when you see it. Maybe you'll be back? Just take a break, like CaliforniaPeggy suggested? When I say I know how you feel, I really do! Take care of yourself.

5. I was just making the remark elsewhere
that I stay away from the toxic areas of this site. I have made wonderful friends in my groups and that's what keeps me here. There are very nice people with nothing to argue about in the groups, just a discussion of a common hobby or interest, and support and sharing of same.

Take a little break and stay on the sunny side of the DU forums. :hi:

12. I agree
The level of snark goes up to a new level when somebody decides they've had enough of this place.
Here's a thought to the snarkies - people get sick of it, and many have left here because of it.
I've been here since 2001, and find the Lounge is just about the only place worth visiting now.

13. Because after seeing a certain name post here...
and then not seeing that name anymore, people wonder what happened to that person. So it is really common courtesy to let people know you are leaving.

14. Beautful. Nothing better than a common courtesy convention which
makes whining acceptable.

(General observation, LeftyFingerPop, not a shot at you.)

What we need is a "Waaaaaaaaah" forum for these posts, so that people could go look up the missing and at the same time we could keep the whining from people leaving confined to one forum.

19. You could certainly make that case.
However, this is only the second such post I've commented on (I've seen a few dozen over the years), I didn't initiate the whining, and most of these boo-hoo posts seem to translate to "I need attention, please beg me to stay back." I'll bet my brand of "whining" about these posts is a lot less objectionable to most here than the sort of whining that inspired it.

I always put people who post whiny farewell boo-hoos on ignore, as I will to the OP by the end of the day.

Quite honestly, hers was whiny, and the post of mine you consider "snarky" was at least honest and sincere "snark."

My only ignores are the forced ones.

But do what you have to.

29. If someone decides to
post "boo hoo, I'm not happy, I'm picking up my toys and going home" and then decides not to, I have no interest in what that person has to say from that point on.

BTW, what's your definition of a "forced" ignore?

35. Well, it is not my definition, it is DU's definition.
Forced ignore is when the mods add someone to your ignore list because you don't get along with that person.

And addressing the first part of your post...here is where you and I differ... I have an interest in what anyone has to say, whether I agree with it or not.

38. Ah.
I've actually never heard of that "forced ignore," so thanks for letting me know what it is. I tend to slap the louder people on ignore very quickly, so perhaps that's why I never saw a forced one.

As for addressing the second part of your post, I used to think that way, but don't anymore. I have no interest in the opinion of anyone who trolls for what strike me as "please, stay" posts because whether it's begging or genuine disappointment with the forum, a quick change of mind leaves me wondering if I can believe anything else a potential attention whore writes.

I have no interest in the same drivel I hear from Republicans over and over (I don't have to listen to what Limpballs, Hannity, Coburn and the like have to say on an issue to have a good idea of what their opinion is), and I have no interest in the words of actual political whores whose opinion blatantly changes with the polls (examples include McCain taking a tough stance on illegal immigration ONLY when it looks like his seat is in jeopardy, as well as anything which has ever come out of the mouth of Arlen Specter).

In your case, however, I do have an interest - we don't agree on what we're currently discussing, but you come across as an adult. If you were to post a "boo hoo, people aren't posting the way I like so I'm going home" though, that would change, and you'd be on ignore before you came back (assuming you ever did). The "boo hoo" posts strike me as childlike, and I prefer to restrict my forum time discussing things with people who act like adults.

39. Well, the person who you insinuated is an attention whore...
is actually a very rational professional person who consistently posts valid opinions.

If you read her post, she is basically saying that the snark in DU is unhealthy for her.

She is a shrink, and she knows about what she speaks of.

That being said, I value the opinion of every one here. I am not saying I like everyone here...I sure don't, but I always want to read what they have to say.

40. I DID read it,
and to be honest I'd expect a shrink to be able to take snark better (not wanting to ubject oneself to it is one thing, but being actually unable to handle it is not a good sign for a shrink), but no matter.

Her opinion has been posted, and so has mine. Note that mine covers ALL "boo hoo, I'm leaving" posts, not just hers, but even a post from a shrink who "is actually a very rational professional person who consistently posts valid opinions" in your view strikes me a whiny. If and when I decide to stop posting here, I won't subject anyone here to that sort of thing - I'll simply stop posting.

Speaking of putting an end to posts, I'm honestly growing bored with this thread and am about to put the OP in ignore, which means I won't be able to comment further. The last word is yours if you want it.

that is completely up to them. Is what they say cast in stone? Have you ever changed your mind?

Usually, when people make these types of posts, something happened to trigger some emotions. The reason people come back is because they changed their mind after giving it some thought. That's OK with me.

I've not seen that. All the ones I've seen post that they are leaving are truly gone, or most of them anyway. Many of the people I really respected and appreciated have hauled out of here.

More than half of the apparently snarky posts, from what I can tell by the responses, are by people I already have on ignore. You can join them since you're too immature to accept a reasonable exit thread by a long time member and pissing all over their thread.

Bye-bye!

And I hate that fucking pissing graphic on everything and anything I've ever seen it on. It's a fair indicator of one's maturity level, I find.

42. some progressives are in a truly negative space right now
i'm real sick of the hate and real sick of the fear-mongering, i saw the thread whereof you speak and people are just being nasty to no purpose

apparently we are all supposed to follow hoagland and kucunich and pretend to believe that the flow of oil is forever endless -- altho these same guys and their followers used to tell us that oil is running out, one day it's peak oil and the gulf is empty of oil, and oopsy, apparently now there's an entire counter-earth under there as big as the entire seven seas of oil, i mean, c'mon, which is it, peoples??? -- and we should all be afraid, be v. afraid, and just wallow in hopelessness

for crap's sake, i think obama has done a great deal in brokering the $20 billion victim's fund, i think the volunteers who have gone out in hazmat suits in 100-plus heat wave index weather are doing an incredible job, and so on

i just don't see the need for the endless negativity and the endless wallowing in despair

it's bad enough w.out wallowing

i say take a break, ignore the haters, and come back and discuss again when you're ready

i don't mind a "spirited debate" or an exchange of a mudball or two but sometimes it really is just negative and tearing-down

the kind of negativity where people are afraid to eat perfectly good food or to stroll on perfectly good beaches or even to listen to a concert because We! Must! Be! Miserable! All! the! Time! is just sooo unhelpful right now

if people don't want to come down and hear a concert or whatever, if they don't want to eat perfectly good seafood from the safe areas, then maybe they can AT LEAST stop discouraging people who do want to come down and who are willing to spend money

When you see a steady pattern of those posts, you know the
subtext behind it is "not me... not me... not me... don't look

Pity they can't SHOW it's "not them..." by posting intelligent

54. Well, I like you a lot Nolabear. You've always been good to me.
And I think you're an intelligent and witty person. I see your point. And I hope you do come back sometime. Until then, please take care.

I am sincerely wishing you the best.

:)

61. That was really over the top.
OH NOEZ a popular musician from the area puts on a big free concert to promote a little tourism and raise some spirits. Obviously all real true progressives MUST find this offensive and say nasty shit to show they understand the TRUTH about how vile it is, right?

62. Yeah, can't stand the Jimmy Buffet bashers, either. Most of them like Rush, too, so they are doubly
impaired.

But what are you going to do? Ignore them, bash their sacred cows in return, buy them a condom so they catch anything from their own hand...

If you're gone, it was nice knowing you. If you're still here, hang around and use the Ignore function more liberally. We are liberals, and we love tolerance and free speech, but honestly, when someone proves they are a moran, just nuke 'em and don't look back.
