1. Unpaid: I am a stand-up philosopher.
I coalesce the vapour of human experience into a realistic, physical form.

I work in a hotel providing power, microphones and specialized lighting to guests having events in our ballrooms and meeting rooms. For this, I am slightly - oh, ever so slightly - renumerated.

49. Chicago, Chicago, that toddlin' town.
Never been so far south as the Big Easy. It's called the "presentation business" by some, and "A/V" (audiovisual) by others. It's closely connected to the hospitality industry; when hotels are doing well, we're doing well, and when business sucks for hotels, it sucks for us, too. I've been doing this for about twenty years in one aspect or another. Technically, I'm an audio technician. To be totally honest, though, I am a taper and coiler of cords. It's not important work, and it's not terribly interesting work, but it's honest.

Please explicate the nuanced differences between your two competing schools of thought.

39. and are you in Boston? (or just the Red Sox fan)
funny...just today I was thinking about wanting to visit that city. I was only there once many years ago - and mostly driving through late at night. I've always wanted to do the colonial sites and visit Harvard and browse some bookstores and maybe take the ferry out to the Cape.

66. Manchester, NH
About 45 minutes north of Boston.

Tourist tips:

Do a little advance planning and you can hit a lot of historic sites in one day. The original part of the city is quite compact and walkable, so the Old North Church, Paul Revere House, Boston Massacre site/Old State House, Fanuiel Hall/Quincy Market, and the historic cemeteries are all within walking distance.

Quincy Market is a bit on the touristy side, but it's still a good place to stop for lunch.

The museums are very, very good, particularly the Museum of Fine Arts. The MFA has a remarkable Egyptian collection.

If you have access to a car, head out to Concord, Mass. The battle ground has park rangers who provide interpretive talks. While you are in town, visit the old town cemetery and stop at Author's Ridge. Emerson, Thoreau, Hawthorne, and Alcott are all buried within about 30 feet of each other.

If you're a sportt fan, definitely try and see a game at Fenway. Tickets can be tough to come by (if the Yankees are in town, forget it) and expensive, but it's a definite must for a baseball fan.

Other options if you have a car: Salem, Mass (witch trial stuff, Peabody-Essex Museum, plus a beautiful downtown); the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, NH (one of the best smaller art museums in the country); Portsmouth, NH (gentrified seaport with a free waterfront drama and music series, plus great restaurants).

Got an early retirement in 2005, and never looked back!

  • I'm a (business, not public) bank teller F/T. Pay sucks, doing it for the bennies and tuition assistance.
  • I tutor creative writing. Pay sucks, don't know why I'm doing it.
  • I'm the development coordinator for the scholarship fund of a national fraternity. They're not paying me, doing it for the resume.
  • Graduate student. Masters of Business Administration, concentration in NPO management. Actually being paid to go...f*cking bonus, I tell you. If you can, get someone to pay you to go to grad school.
  • Starting a political-communications/activism/PR firm for NPOs with my best friend. Sounded a lot more fun before I started doing it.

Edit: Failing to sleep. Probably overstretched as I'll drop dead at this pace before age 31.

It has its ups and downs. The ups are the tremendous freedom you have over your time and the direct line you have to your clients. The downs are the tremendous costs associated with running your own business -- hardware, software, health insurance, etc. It can get a little lonely at times too.

When I moved to the Washington DC area, I vowed I would not take a job as a legal secretary. I soon learned that that was all that was available that matched my skill set. Plus it paid way more than I expected, but that's just because salaries are higher here than they were back home (I think).

I hate it. If I could quit working I would, in a heartbeat. If we could afford for me to take a job at half the pay, I would, in a heartbeat.

56. Retired. Last worked in a mental hospital in a work shop helping people get out of the hospital.
I have done many things since I started working at 13...being a janitor, designing installations for clean rooms to make electronic chips, working in a steel mill, but I most loved playing in a series of bar bands for 15 years or so.

I still play at home, mostly electric SG and Les Paul Special types, but I love my Tele, too. I also play bass and harmonica and used to sing, but certain keys annoy the dog...

67. That's one of those jobs I'd consider if I had to "do it all over again".
Enough so that I've considered going to field school as I've been advised that is really the one key requirement for someone just starting-out, knowledge of actual fieldwork technique: how to excavate, how to not damage the artifacts, and the such.

How difficult would it be to get entry-level gainful employment with only field school and without an undergraduate degree in history, anthropology or archaeology? (My work background is in NPOs and business; my BA is in Political Theory, specifically Poli. Comm. Minored in English.)

I asked this question of an archeologist I know, one of my college professors (for a broad survey of the field Introduction to Archeology course), but she just rolled her eyes and brushed me off...she's a specialist in Mesoamerican artifacts and specifically pottery. My interest would run more towards text. Not as in research or translation. I'm actually more interested by finding, preserving ancient texts, maps, books, tapestries. Based on course subjects and materials, I don't think she respected that type of archeology very much.

80. Danger in taking a field school might be that you would love it.
Typically a field school is at a great site and involves careful excavation. This is only a small percentage of what archaeology is, so when you get in the field and have to do survey (looking for sites), testing (limited excavation) and the more mundane tasks it can get some down. Your interests sound more archival and there are lots of museum and archival and library program for folks in from other backgrounds that sound up your alley and take little (often a year or more if you go part time) and involve internship which get you into the circle you need to know to get a job. Drop me an e-mail through DU and I can suggests some web pages that migbht help your search.

I do however, recommend a good field school- its lots of fun!!!

85. Social Worker
I do case management for kids in foster care/relative/non-realtive placements. Started....jeeeesus....eight years ago doing direct care in a group home/emergency shelter and moved "up" from there ;)

Looking for a career change. Took a year off the year before last and went back to school full time for sciences and math, and am trying to figure out what else I need to get done in order to apply for PA school in the future.

Also considering going back to grad school (I did two years worth) for a PsyD; maybe get into testing/assessment for the kids I work with now. I'm of mixed feelings about the value of adhering too strongly to test results, but it is a fact that without assessments nobody gets any assistance. If somebody's gotta do it, I'd be ok with getting paid for it.

Social work has been very rewarding, but it just barely (and I mean BARELY) pays the bills. I like to tell myself I don't care about money; but my girlfriend and I would like to get married and have kids and whatnot, and when you start thinking long range like that, well....money really does matter, to some degree. :(

93. why are you curious? it's an offensive question, really
altho i am myself an american, i find myself increasingly offended by the need for americans to ask immediately what i do for a living so they can put me in a box and "know" everything about me based on their class prejudices, rather than on actually getting to know me

how could it possibly matter what someone does for a living, on an internet discussion board?

as a school teacher you have a socially accepted job w. lots of benefits and free time and that's nice for you, but why should i have to listen to your judgments abt what i do for a living? (good & bad
people never say anything original about it)

Nobody is "judging" anybody's jobs or reaching conclusions about their social class. I can't imagine why you'd find the question offensive, since this is merely an Internet message board and you have the complete freedom to ignore the entire thread. Which I strongly encourage you to do, as opposed to pouring bile on a pretty innocuous discussion.

"as a school teacher you have a socially accepted job w. lots of benefits and free time and that's nice for you,"

Teachers: Among the lowest paid in professional circles, currently pay between 20-30% toward the benefits that legislators grant them and teachers bargain for with unions that they also pay approximately $900 a year to. Work an average of 10-12 hours a day over a school year that is set by the state that they live in PLUS take classes and attend work mandated workshops and seminars to maintain their teaching licenses. (Public school districts contribute a small amount to the sums this requirement requires)

I do agree with this statement of yours however,

"why should i have to listen to your judgments abt what i do for a living? (good & bad
people never say anything original about it)"

Did I mention that teachers are not paid for approximately 2 and 1/2 months of the year because when school is not in session, teachers are not paid for their "time off".

149. It hasn't let up for me since last September. I keep waiting for the slow month, and
I know it will come, but so far every time I think I'm going to have a lull something comes up at the last minute.

Like you say, I'm grateful and not complaining one bit. Especially since it's only June and I've already equaled my salary at the last job I had before going freelance (which was, admittedly a crappy salary). I guess even if I don't get any more work for the rest of the year I know I can survive because I did it for 8 years. Still, I'm trying to make as much money as possible to get more put into savings for the slow times. I would really enjoy a tiny little bit of a break though. Just like a week or two. But being busy is definitely a good problem to have right now.

Hang in there, you must be doing a good job!

131. Airline Mechanic
Specialized in heavy structure repair for twenty years...did a 6 year spell in Maintenance Quality Assurance...and then moved on to Non-Destructive Testing...specifically Fluorescent Penetrant Inspection where I inspect engine components.

Overall, it's been a good field but the airline industry is volatile as a lot of my friends at Eastern,Pan Am, and Braniff can attest to.

I haven't touched a ukulele since the brief Tiny Tim phase I went through in 1969.

Dorky?

Or, so incredibly bleeding edged hip, that you SEEM dorky to the squares?
