Anybody else's cat get lethargic in the summer heat?
One of our kitties I think is sick. She is really lethargic and doesn't seem to be eating that I can see, though she has gone to the bathroom, both 1 & 2, in the last 24 hours. So she must be eating and drinking something. Is this normal for cats in the summer heat and humidity? She looks skinnier too. Partly from shedding but she does look like she has dropped some weight. she kind of disappeared for a day, but that is because we had company and she doesn't like new people. Any ideas?

1. When its hot in the house yes
I keep my AC on for the comfort of me and teh kitties. Its one of the few things I really splurge on. But if you suspect she is not well, she probably isn't. Instincts about pets are usually right on sadly I've found.

2. Keep an eye on her
But don't panic. A lot of cats deal poorly with hot weather, especially fuzzy breeds like Maine Coons, Norweigan Forest Cats, Turkish Vans, and the like. One of mine is part Maine Coon, so she basically liquifies when the temps hit the eighties. Even the other one, a short haired tabby, gets uncharacteristically lazy during a hot spell.

3. Hell, my cat is lethargic ALL of the time.
He's a good 20 pounder (maybe more now) and 13 or so, but he's been like that for years. Total sweetheart. If you even look at him he starts purring.

In your cat's case, it sounds like a trip to the vet is in order. That sounds like a problem. Mine is in good health, just lazy. His heart, lungs, and blood work results are always fine, but I get the same advice every time - "make him lose weight". It hasn't worked.

4. Took her to the vet
they did blood work(couldn't determine anything), gave us some de-worming pills and a appetite activator. She still hasn't eaten though.

5. My cat just sits around. Lethargic, or just a cat. He's 20 and
about 13 pounds. But all he ever did was chase around his companion calico. But she died. So I think he is lonely, but lethargic. And more so in hot weather. Then he just lays on the floor, or sleeps.

8. Mine has gotten too lazy to chew.
It's beyond annoying. Lethargic doesn't even begin to describe it.

10. I kept mine in most of the day.
He refused to take off his black fur coat. His buddies were stretched out in the driveway & on the lawns looking like cat carci. Thank goodness it's cooled off some, so they're back on the prowl.

12. If you've taken her to the vet,
just keep an eye on her. DO make sure to keep an air-conditioned house available to her.
I have a friend who doesn't care much for AC, and I'm on him constantly to think of his poor, furry animal!

14. Probably not a problem if the furry animal is a cat
Cats descended from desert wild cats. They like it warm.

15. But not god-awful hot.
Edited on Fri Jun-18-10 07:59 PM by muffin1
My cats go out on our screened in back porch, but after an hour or two they are stretched out as flat as can be inside on our cold hardwood floor.

13. might try isolating her with a measured amount food and water to make sure
water is MUCH more important than food in the heat

16. I don't like AC
My cat gets lethargic in the heat starting at about 82-85F. If it hits 90F he barely moves off the hardwood floor in his "cool spot". He used to lose weight in the summer because he had less appetite but as he has aged and fattened up even the heat doesn't keep him from eating. His appetite is usually best in the morning when it is cooler.

I think it is pretty normal. I like heavy blankets but at 90F even I take a few blankets off the bed. The cat has no choice but to wear his coat.

I compromise and put the AC on if temps are predicted in the 90+ degree range for a few days. But as I get older I like the AC less and less.

Definitely try changing his water several times during the day to entice him to drink.

How warm is it where you are? Warmer than usual recently?
