1. My niece was probably about this age...
Edited on Wed Jun-16-10 10:18 PM by MiddleFingerMom
(edit lest you think she had volunteer jpbs)
.
.
.
...when a photographer took a similar picture for an article in Self Magazine
about infant drownproofing around the mid-80's.
.
My sister taught the class at the local Y.
.
My BIL was making well in excess of 500K/year at that time.
.
She made $15 for teaching this half-hour class once a week.
.
Every two weeks, she would proudly display her $30 check to him (minus taxes,
of course) and remind him that she was contributing to the family budget, also.
.
She did have various volunteer jobs and raised two incredible children, at least
one of whom was drownproofed.

2. "drownproofing"- I've never heard of it
I just thought this picture was amazing and wasn't sure how it was created.

3. I think the cutoff age is well under a year old...
.
.
.
.
...but infants retain an EXTREMELY strong sense memory of the
watery environment of the womb (that's the theory, anyways)
and are not freaked out at all by total immersion -- most gaze
about seemingly in wonder as this child is doing.
.
With a MINIMAL amount of help (I'm pretty sure that 1/2-hour
class was sufficient), they can be "trained" to roll over on
immersion, and their high amount of body fat means they will
float on their backs -- saving their lives should they ever
fall into a pool or the like.
