Mrs. Lib and I almost bought the farm yesterday.
'Bought the farm' - isn't that a nice little euphemism?
We were on a two lane highway - one we drive all the time - I come up over the crest of a hill and am staring directly at the hood of some dumb fuck in an SUV passing a tractor - passing a tractor in a no passing zone on a fucking hill!

Touchdown Jesus Christ! I had just room to drive off the road and save our butts. And there I sat half in the ditch, half on the shoulder shaking.
Shit like this seems to be happening more and more.

2. glad you guys are safe! And I agree -- we live in a rural
area, with lots of windy, hilly two-lane roads and I'm scared sh*tless much of the time, because people seem to be coming around the curve in our lane, or passing recklessly, much more frequently. On the phone, or just in a big old godd*mn hurry to get nowhere 10 seconds faster.

How terrifying. :scared:

3. Maybe you folks almost bought the farm because...
.
.
.
...Tobin bought the truck yesterday.
.
.
.
Maybe it was THAT truck...
.
.
.
...and the poor driver in that SUV had gone a little crazy
because he had been trapped behind Tobin getting used to
his new vehicle at FIVE FUCKING MPH OVER THE LAST TWENTY
MILES OF NO-PASS TWO-LANE BACK HIGHWAY!!!
.
.
.
Just a guess.
.
.
.
PROBABLY nothing to it.

oh my sweet baby jesus(when you invoke jesus you can use any jesus you choose, i myself prefer baby jesus)
how many of histories tragedies are mere coincedents?

5. I am NOT a conspiracy theorist....
.
.
.
.
.
...although I DO think there's a good chance Tobin and that SUV
driver knew each other and knew that Mr and Mrs Lib would be
driving that stretch of road at that time.
.
.
.
.
.
That's not theory.
.
.
.
.
.
There's just too many facts in plain sight to ignore.

7. Glad you and the Mrs. are OK! As for the euphemism:
In the military aviation business, "bought the farm" was the standard phrase for someone losing their life in an airplane accident.

On one occasion, a several of us were at the bar (that happened on a lot of Fridays after flying was done) discussing the origins of that expression. The version I have heard most is that it originated in WW I. Often times, when a soldier was killed in action, the family would use the government insurance proceeds to pay off the family farm. Eventually, the euphemism became associated with aviation somehow.

Is there anyone out there who can shed light on that one way or the other?

Smoking hole and auger in* were also popular expressions. "Take the nylon elevator," "Syrian escape maneuver," and "give the airplane back to the taxpayers" applied in the case of a successful ejection.

*coincidentally, The Auger Inn was the name of the casual bar at the Officer's Club at Randolph AFB.

13. I always thought 'bought the farm' came from farmers
who were always in hock up past their ears and as such were required by bankers to carry enough life insurance to pay their debts should they die.

8. Ignoring double lines on a hill -- dumber than dirt.
The SUV driver probably still hasn't figured out that he/she was the sole cause for the near collision.
The tractor was moving too slowly, no doubt. :eyes:
I hate certain country roads because I know that drivers are too cavalier about observing the passing zones, never mind the speed limits.

I'm glad that the rurallibs weren't hurt in this incident.

jerks driving out there--whether it's country roads or the interstate.

Glad y'all are ok!

16. Glad you are safe. I agree. I see way more of this stuff. Crazy people always on our bumper and
itching to pass us in inappropriate places even though we are doing the speed limit. What is wrong with people?!
