Mother's checking account and left for parts unknown? You haven't seen them for 8 years and they send you an IM offline.

3. I'd probably would want to say it with a large stick.

5. Luke 15:22-24
22And the father said to his servants: Bring forth quickly the first robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. 23And bring hither the fatted calf, and kill it, and let us eat and make merry; 24Because this my son was dead, and is come to life again: was lost, and is found. And they began to be merry.

It's from the parable of the prodigal son. You should invite them home and throw them a lavish party with barbecue beef and silly conical hats so that when the prodigal returns home, he's not expecting your lawyer to slap that injunction order in his hand.

6. Maybe respond with compassion.
And if they're still an asshole, stop talking to them.

And I love the other poster's idea of asking them their address. :D

7. i don't engage w. such persons
in similar situations i just shun the person, they steal from a family member, they'd steal from me, you don't want that person even getting into your house

if a person gets into your house and steals your visa card, checks, etc. sometimes you're responsible because the credit card co. threatens to prosecute YOU for fraud if you won't pay -- it isn't like the zero liability that comes when a stranger steals your identity -- the banks claim to believe that you must be in on it and you're somehow splitting the money

therefore you CANNOT engage w. such people, don't talk to them, don't relate to them, don't meet them, don't have them in your home or have your purse/wallet anywhere they might glance into it

JUST SHUN THEM FOREVER

if not too much time has passed, you can try tipping off law enforcement but it hasn't worked for us, police refuse to do anything about such thefts and frauds between family members, they just let the older person get raped of everything financially

can you tell i'm disgusted? just don't associate w. such people, protect yourself, it seems to me based on our bitter experiences you're own your own when it comes to most con artists

after 8 yrs i don't even think the mom would have a chance at civil recovery of the money so it seems utterly pointless to have anything to do w. the thief

10. Cut them off--no contact. If this is a boyfriend, you don't need him.

If this is a relative, you don't need him/her.

I wonder if this person has a substance abuse problem? It would fit. And people who are drinking/using can go through money faster than fecal matter goes through a goose. Then the person will come sniffing around for more money.

then gain their trust..

17. I'm with Auggie on this. I like this idea a lot.
It might take some time that would be difficult to waste on someone like this, and to keep up any kind of convivial relationship.

I'm not sure what the statute of limitations on the theft would be, but this would also be considered elder abuse which might not have a short limitation period. Would be worth checking into.

20. yah, 8 yrs ago is way too long ago
sure there's a statute of limitations

there is NOTHING to be gained by being in contact w. a con artist, absolutely NOTHING

after 8 yrs forget abt a successful civil action much less a criminal action

the only reason to get their address would be to commit a crime yourself (violence) do you really want to destroy your own life over this shitheel?

12. The behavior you are describing is about as low as it gets.
This person should be dead to you. Why are you wasting energy thinking about what to say in response to an IM from them, after all these years, out of the ether?

Hit delete. And move on.

13. Hello, Uncle
My uncle did the same thing to my grandmother. My father eventually forgave him after he reappeared many years later. Me? I have no use for him and would ignore any attempt to contact me.

21. some of us already tried that
after 8 yrs you cannot have grounds even for civil much less criminal action

you're just getting entangled w. a shitty person and destroying yr own life and wasting yr own time to no purpose

be glad you've never actually faced the situation

the police don't do anything abt family members stealing from family members

23. Not unless the someone wronged is complaining,
And the whole case comes with a very pretty bow tied around it, anyway.

The problem is the DA usually won't touch those cases, because they are often complex and they want easy to win simple cases. So the police don't do anything, because there's no point for them to do so. Its a crazy system we got here, where you can terrorize your grandparents with relative impunity, but lord help ya if you smoke a joint.
