1. I had a girl (who was horse crazy) explain that to me many years ago.
It isn't fit for being stated here without getting the thread locked.

6. Is it because of those giant horse cawks?
don't tell me that whole unicorn/virgin thing isn't totally phallic.

16. I live only about 18 miles from Enumclaw (or 'Enumscratch' as we call it), but it may as well be
the moon for how far away it really is...

They do things differently there...

4. I've been wondering that for years.
My eldest daughter, city born and reared, was crazy for horses growing up, even though she never saw (or rode) one up close until she was in junior high, when she went to horse camp about a week.

Now, she's a soon-to-be college sophomore and is working this summer -- at a horse camp.

Didn't get it from me -- my fascination with horses began and ended with the "Misty of Chincoteague" stories.

8. I read that in 4th grade in the early 70's. We saw Misty's granddaughter.
She was at a local library event and she had the same markings.

5. My theory
Back in the days before automobiles, horses provided women one of the few outlets for freedom and adventure they had. Once cars came into the picture, there was a bit of a shift in that men (in a very general sense) tend to enjoy the aspect of being in control of something whereas women (in a very general sense) like to form relationships.

So men tend to get more involved with things like cars and motorcycles and things they can fully control while women enjoy the deep relationship they can form with a horse. At the barn where I ride, there are close to 150 boarders. Probably 98% of them are women and we've talked about this with a fair amount of agreement.

As to the idea that women get some sort of sexual thrill out of riding - I've been riding all my life and can't say I've ever experienced anything like that. Not saying it isn't possible but it's just never entered into my reasons for riding.

12. That makes a great amount of sense. I just finished reading a book
that talked about women's brains and men's brains and autism. Men were more into systems and women more into empathy. Though this is not true of everyone. Autism is usually found in boys and is an example of extreme systemization.

15. That interpretation sounds pretty retrograde to me, even if we apply it "in a very general sense."
We might as well claim that women like horses because they can go out shoe-shopping together.

22. This is the truth, really, IMO.

If you have that standard childhood fantasy about what it would be like to have endless freedom, the open road (or field), etcetera, then a horse is both a vehicle AND a companion. And to get a horse to carry you, there has to be some kind of negotiation and give-and-take. A horse is a BEING, not an object.

I was always also intrigued by mustangs, zebras, wild Asian horses, the ponies of Assateague, etc.--wild herds of motorcycles without riders mostly just sit there and rust. :)

I never got an explicitly sexual thrill out of riding (other than that adrenal whole-body sense of well-being when you're having fun and out in a beautiful setting and going fast, which is erotic to me, but rather diffused), but if I had, I imagine it would have nothing to do with horse cock and everything to do with saddle friction and thigh muscles. Just sayin.'

23. This makes sense to me also.
I went through a brief period of horse craziness when I was about 10. Lucky for me I had a friend who had several horses and I spent a great deal of time at her house. We would constantly fantasize about running away from our unhappy homes, and going to live with our horses in the bush. We'd take the horses and go riding all over the fields and through the woods to find the perfect spot to build our tree house. LOL, it's funny now, but at the time it was a helpful way to deal with our unhappiness and our sense of being trapped by our parents.

13. Yes I liked renting horse and going galloping. It wasn't so easy to get the rental
horse to gallup but once I did it was as so smooth and powerful...like music.

17. Just cultural stereotypes and pressures.
I was horse crazy as a kid. Most of my male friends were. I've listened to Willie Nelson and Toby Keith sing about their horses, and seen Hidalgo and John Wayne movies to know there's not a shred of truth to the OP's premise. Both genders are drawn to horses equally.

What I have seen is that boys who are horse crazy can go out for football, baseball, soccer, auto sports, hunting, and a whole slew of other options, whereas girls who are horse crazy have only limited access to many of those options. So maybe the result is that girls wind up in horse-related sports more than boys because it's more culturally accepted.

But from my experience there's no basis to claim that men don't love horses as much as women love horses. And I grew up around a lot of friends who owned horses, so my observations aren't from lack of experience.

20. I was one of those girls.
Decades later, in his droll way, my dad dropped his theory about it out of a clear blue sky: "Little girls figure out early on they'd better learn how to handle things that are bigger, more dangerous, smellier, and a hell of a lot dumber than they are. It's practice for dealing with men."

I was like :wow:

and then I was like

24. Thank you, Sir!
He's my father, of course I'll keep him!

He taught me snark as a survival skill- the intellectual equivalent of throwing a kid into the pool to teach her how to swim. (Well, he did both, actually, and they both worked.)
