In what ways are you shallow?
If you're a DUer, you are probably pretty liberal, care about the planet, its inhabitants (human and otherwise), have liberal social views, are tolerant, etc.

But what materialistic things do you lust after? Assuming your most basic needs are taken care of - a home, a way to support yourself, etc., what frivolous things does your heart desire? High priced wine? Fancy electronics? Clothes? Jewelry? Cars? Books?

My weaknesses tend toward clothes and pearls. And possibly wine. Reference books. I'll elaborate a little later in the thread. :D

1. It is not really desire for materialistic things.
But having some resources to be able to be around parts of the world that depend on materialistic items. In that materialistic items are not the need, but a method to do other things.

So material things, mostly fluid resources, can add to learning by being able to see more things.

And learning can add to many other parts of life and even society.

16. Beer snob
As a rule I don't drink yellow beer. I never drink yellow beer out of a can. I was at a gathering a few weeks ago and everyone who I usually enjoy a decent pint with were drinking the yellow swill. I was drinking water.

Friend says.... "wow you have standards" I said, I am drinking what you are drinking only this doesn't have any alcohol in it.
I make an exception for Harp and hard cider in the summer but beer to me is red, brown or black. I can't spell or write very well but I generally speak well enough to not be labeled a culchie.

3. Retirement may not seem frivolous, but from this angle, it kinda is.
If I could afford it, I'd have the kitchen of my dreams. If I had enough money that some was actually really disposable, I'd spend it on fine cooking accessories. Like a good aluminum soup pot, top quality knives and perhaps even a stand mixer.

5. I like nice stuff, but only certain nice stuff.
Not necessarily new stuff, but well-made and well-designed stuff. I'd rather have very few possessions and just a couple of things I really enjoy looking at and using than a whole house full of stuff I consider primarily inconsequential. (For example, I don't care about wine, jewelry, cars or closets full of expensive clothing -- but we do like our electronics, books, music, pens, nice paper, typewriters, koi pond).

And I do, so I don't.

I like old hot rod type cars and sports cars and don't like much classical music other than some of that written in the late 19th century.

Other than that I am fucking DEEP...

The first time I walked into one, I received this call on my cellphone from my SO:

"It's 8 pm - you left at 5 to go to the drugstore. Are you okay?"
"I just discovered a whole warehouse of....shoes. Discounted shoes. Some are even in my size."
"Say no more - when does it close so I know when to expect you home?"

24. From time to time I indulge in the lust
for material goods (beyond the necessities, near).

Based upon my bookmarks (and other saved data), I would grab up:
* some flex stovepipe and fittings (creosote problem);
* a good tv antenna (DTV... need I say more);
* a desktop-replacement "laptop" that I could also use as a tv (so that I could get rid of a bunch of old computer stuff and the old, bulky tv -- and cut down on electric use);
* a very high efficiency heat (and cooling) pump (screw using only wood for heat, roasting like a hog);
* some "natural light" cfls.

But frankly, even if I had the money, I might be slow to buy any of these things.

I don't really need them.

:D

I don't want a LOT of anything. Clutter annoys me and I'd rather have one thing of very good quality than a bunch of items that may add up to the cost of the one good thing but are of middling or inferior quality & won't last.

I have to admit to a weakness for a few things: I can certainly be happy with non-couture clothes, but my work requires professional, somewhat conservative (though not banking/legal conservative) attire. I'm fine with Talbots, JCrew, Ann Taylor and vintage or thrift store finds for my workwear so long as the material is natural, not synthetic. I hate synthetic, unless it's less than 20% of the fabric blend.

But I'd love to be able to buy, without guilt, a very nice versatile Burberry (or similar quality) trench coat; a few silk dresses, a few nice (Coach) handbags and maybe even if I could bring myself to do it, a Chanel jacket. I don't have unreasonable desires for fancy shoes; so long as they are comfortable and appropriate with what I'm wearing, that's fine. Oh, and a really nice pair of pearl earrings and necklace. Really nice. Maybe black pearls, or some of the beautiful non-white pearls. Things that can become heirlooms if taken care of well.

I have no idea where this desire for pearl jewelry comes from; I usually don't like much jewelry and asked NOT to have an engagement ring (I only wear a simple band). But I saw a picture of a beautiful pair of pearl earrings and was hooked. Though I'd probably look for them in estate jewelry, because my heart objects to what gold and other mineral mining does to the planet. I'll satisfy my materialistic urges by buying used.

I love books, but I'm perfectly happy with my local library for fiction. Reference books I'd like to be able to buy.

Music, I'd probably buy some classical recordings I can't bring myself to buy right now.

Also, probably a pretty snazzy camera.

And a way to have fresh lilacs all year round. :D

Wines, I can be very happy with a $10-15 bottle of wine.

I'm very happy with my Honda. No need to get any fancier.

But I also would like to be able to fly business class if the flight is longer than 5 hours (or overnight). Hopping around the US, first class or business class seems to me like money just thrown out the window. But longer haul flights, especially if you have to be alert when you land, I can see the value of being able to afford more room to sleep or just be comfortable at 30,000+ feet.

My husband would chuck it all for cool ham radio equipment and antique radios. He also has a fondness for shirts that are long enough for him to tuck in (he's quite tall); it seems these days your average shirt has short tails (is that the right word?) and pull out of his pants at the slightest movement. Shirts with enough material to stay put when tucked in are $$$$. I'd spend serious money on him for some nice sport coats and shoes.

Edit: For my cats, I'd probably buy them some fancy beds and/or those fancy climbing platforms.

I mean, really, how else can you expect to really appreciate a movie on Blu-ray at home?

The screen is only 110". I didn't want to go over the top. ;)

I will have to admit the TV in the bathroom across the hall from the home theater could be a little excessive, but it is kind of nice when you don't want make everyone else wait with the movie paused while you go.

44. There are plenty of good women that I'm just not attracted to.
It bothers me. It makes me feel guilty and shallow. Ruling someone out as a potential relationship partner based on physical characteristics goes against my bettter angels. But I can't *make* myself feel attracted to someone if it just isn't there.

It's funny, when I thought I would be happily married for life, I considered myself a guy with pretty loose standards for physical attractiveness. If a woman was a little on the curvy side, or a little on the skinny side, I didn't mind. Whether she was the "pretty" type, or more "quirky" it didn't matter. I basically felt like I would be attracted to most reasonably healthy women who fell within my age range.

Now that I am forced to contemplate the possibility of looking for someone else in my life, nearly every woman I see looks unappealing. Except, of course, for the happily married ones walking around with their husbands. Lots of them look pretty. :(
