The Faces Set to Reunite Without Rod Stewart
Ronnie Wood and Co. prep tour with Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall, draft Noel Gallagher and Slash as special guests

The Faces will no longer wait for Rod Stewart to reunite, announcing on their website yesterday that three of the original members of the legendary British band — guitarist Ronnie Wood, drummer Kenney Jones and keyboardist Ian McLagan — will team up with Simply Red singer Mick Hucknall and Sex Pistols bassist Glen Matlock. The group is set to perform as the Faces at this year's Vintage at Goodwood festival in England on August 13th. "It's exciting to be on this path again and I hope that the Faces fans are excited as we are," Wood said in a statement. "I'm just really looking forward to seeing them this summer — bring it on!"

As Rolling Stone previously reported, the Faces, without Stewart but with Hucknall and former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman, reunited in October 2009 to perform at London's Royal Albert Hall. (Wyman, who will be replaced by Matlock, filled in for Faces bassist Ronnie Lane, who passed away in 1997.) In 2008, a Faces reunion with Stewart nearly took place: the group rehearsed to see if they "still remember the songs." But Stewart quickly quashed reunion talk by saying there would be no Faces concerts in 2009 as he was busy with other commitments. After the Royal Albert Hall gig, Wood, Jones and McLagan all expressed a desire to keep the reunion going, with or without Stewart.

"The timing is just right, we can feel the excitement and we cannot wait to be back on stage playing to a live audience again," Jones said in a statement. "It's going to be lots of fun." In an interview with the BBC, Wood also revealed that the band is in talks to bring special guests out on stage, including Noel Gallagher, Slash and the Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson. "There's loads of people that have said, 'Please, let us sing with you.'" Wood said. The newly reunited crew is currently drawing up their schedule for a tour.

OK, I can see Glen Matlock on bass. Ronnie Lane was his biggest influence, and he'll be honored to do it. But Mick fucking Hucknall? Simply Red?? Not seeing it. If they HAD to go with a scab singer, Chris Robinson would be a better choice.

And Rod Stewart..... FUCK YOU if you can't take time out of your "career" of half-assed big band covers to sing the best goddamn music you ever made - no, make that the ONLY decent music you ever made - one more time.

1. Bah...
I hate these cobbled together "reunions". And Mick Huknall?!?! They should have gone with an unkown that could get Rod's tone. This'll be a joke.

2. I've been hearing rumors about Mick Taylor joining back up with the Stones.

I wonder if there has been anymore news about that?

4. Stones have no tours planned this year
But Jagger & Richards have had nothing but good things to say about Taylor in their current interviews for the Exile remaster. And there are "rumors" that Mick T. might have been in the studio touching up a couple of guitar parts for the "new" tracks on this album.

And the next big release from the Stones will be the long awaited 1972 concert film "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Rolling Stones", in which Taylor is also prominently featured.

So IF the Stones play live (in any capacity) in the near future, I'd be very surprised NOT to see him there. Maybe Bill Wyman too?

8. It would be unbelievable to see Taylor perform with the Stones.

My favorite Stones tune of all time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fa4HUiFJ6c&feature=fvw

It's interesting to hear how the Glimmer Twins are talking up their boy, Mick Taylor! :)

I mean no disrespect to Ronnie Wood....loved, loved, loved him in Faces.

5. Faux Faces "reunion" will "Simply Suck"
Anyone notice how rapidly Faces fell apart when Ronnie Lane left the band?

I kind of agree with what Jeff Beck said recently in Rolling Stone about Stewart's reluctance to do this...he no longer has the voice, he should no longer go out and attempt to sing the songs.

Since the Who kicked Kenney Jones to the curb, everything he's touched has turned to shit, so he probably needs the money. McLagen is probably tied of session pay. Wood, WTF? He's a Rolling Stone...what's HIS motivation?

But it will be like the people who go to see Journey without Steve Perry and Yes without Jon Anderson and all the rest. The people who go these concerts just want to get drunk / high and sing along to songs they remember. They could give a rat's ass about artistic integrity.

6. ^ What he said
Why not tour as a "Supergroup" ? They're entitled to do Faces songs. Kenny Jones IMO is one the best drummers ever. See him here in a famous drum solo that kicked everyone's career into high gear:

7. Yeah, that track...always one of my favorites.
I guess I still have lingering bad memories of Jones' time wit The Who...of course, their two crap albums ("Face Dances" and "It's Hard") had just as much to do with Townshend's songwriting of the era and Daltrey's performances of the songs.

But I was a big fan of the "alternating Stewart albums"...all of which had the Faces on board...a Stewart album on Mercury, followed by a Faces album on Warners, followed by a Stewart album on Mercury...

10. Perhaps that should be the final answer
And Woody, Mac & Kenny should know so better than anybody. Because even in the 70's, while the Faces DID manage to keep touring for a couple years after Ronnie left the band, they didn't do so well in the studio, only coming up with a couple of singles before Mick & Keith stole Woody and Rod decided to make disco records.

Not that Tetsu Yamauchi was a bad bass player, he was actually pretty good. But he wasn't a second lead vocalist and songwriter who kept the band from becoming "The Rod Stewart Show". BTW, it's odd that he wasn't asked to join this tour.

Still though, nothing beats the REAL Faces.

13. I have a lot of '60's Rod Stewart music, none at all since the early '70's -
He WAS one of my great inspirations as a singer, but his absence is no loss to them now. I think they want to be THE FACES with a singer instead of THE SINGER with a band, and I understand that perfectly.
The band will be great, and I wish them success on the tour.

Stay at home in your tux, Rod - you would be a disgrace to this band now. You have become Pat Boone.
