Does anyone actually enjoy the Shrek films?
Or have we as a society decided to say that they're good simply so that no one actually has to sit through these boring and washed-out-looking things?

The first one was kind of funny, but by the time we got to the American Idol spoof, it was clear that any cleverness had been completely bled out of the concept.

And I thought that Mike Myers was legally enjoined from making any more films after The Love Guru?

1. Kind of liked the first one, although I wasn't all that impressed
I found the sequels that I've seen even less impressive.

Toy Story 1 and 2, on the other hand, I love. I'm hoping the third one will be as good.

2. Yes I loved the first two
The third one was meh. I personally thought the Puss in Boots character was perfectly cast and made 2 even funnier than the first.

3. The first one got old before it ended.
Never wanted to see the other one. And I really can't believe they're trying to milk it again.

5. Pop culture references do not equal humor
Quite the opposite. Embarassingly, the first Shrek contained 'Macarena' references, and it was released long after that fad had come and gone.

I've never seen the wonderfulness of Shrek. Pixar films are SO much funnier, wittier and well-executed.

7. +1000
Also judging from the amount of laughter in the theater where I saw the first two, I would say a great number of movie goers agree. But the movies are popular therefore someone has to bash it here. Much like Titanic...:eyes:

10. It's entirely possible to bash a popular film for reasons other than its popularity.
I mean, Rush is popular, too.

For some reason.

11. Yeah, and I also wouldn't equate not liking something with bashing it
If people like the Shrek films (as my kids and wife do), so be it. I just don't find them all that interesting; well, the first one was ok.

18. Well he wrote his OP as "does anyone actually"
I'm just pointing out in my own annoying way that his OP is kinda inaccurate...:D

20. Well...
If the question was "Does anyone actually..." then I guess you prove that the answer is yes.

Yes, crazy, cat-loving big pharma shills do enjoy Shrek.

Question answered. Thanks! :hi:

6. I really enjoyed the first one too.
But missed the other ones. Based on what some people say, I didn't miss much it seems.

8. I liked the first two
But they should now give it a rest. They should not feel the need to be in competition wth Police Academy to see who can make the most sequels

12. Apparently the 3D version isnt doing well
My daughter works at a theater and I asked her if Shrek brought in a lot of money last weekend. She said the 2D version did but not the 3D. Not surprising since the 3D is waaayyy more expensive to see. The theater has the 2D, 3D, and the XD 3D screen..some tickets run as high as 14 dollars each. For a family of 4, you're looking at almost 60 bucks JUST for the tickets.

13. I like the Shrek films.
Shrek 2 was my favorite. Things don't have to be "great" for me to like them.

14. I'm not the person to ask, since I've never seen one. I had seen them
advertised and thought they were cartoon movies for kids. My sister says I should watch them because of the background scenes. According to her, they are as good as, if not better than, the main focus of the movie.

The second one not so much. I haven't seen any of them since.

16. Mike Myers is great at making good movies that should never been sequelized.
Shrek I? Cute. The rest were redundant.

Wayne's World? Funny. The second was forgettable.

Austin Powers? Charming and goofy. The sequels? Dreadful overkill. That one especially should have been left on its own.

19. I like 'Shrek'
The first one is clever just for its satirical deconstruction of classic fairy tales. It's true that the concept was a little too warmed over by the third film, but I am encouraged by the positive reviews the new one is getting.

Mike Myers said in a recent interview that 'Shrek' is largely about class. And he is right. Throw in prejudice too - an ogre was once as welcomed in Far Far Away as a person of Mexican descent is in Arizona. Think how class permeates those old Grimm's fairy tales - like Cinderella, who was supposed to accept her lot in life as the servant for her stepsisters.

I am not too concerned about the dated pop culture references. These are kids' movies which can be enjoyed by adults. Not the other way around. I think the points I outlined above are enough for the adults to ponder and enjoy.

How can you still be a person of Mexican descent in Arizona?

(I kid the 48th!)

22. Only smart people with taste in movies, so you don't have to like them.
You can watch boring crap like Lord of the... Oh never mind.

Seriously, the first was funny in a deconstructive way, the second was brilliant as a metaphorical class/race struggle (you noticed the "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner" sequence, I'm sure), and the third was not too offensive as a study of how to try to make more money off the first two without really doing anything memorable (In fact, I can't remember much at all of it). I liked the first a lot, the second a little, and the third only because it entertained my kids for a while--although I loved the "Assume the position" scene.

Haven't seen the fourth. My first reaction was to be pissed off and shout "Oh come on, just let it fucking die already!" which got me a lot of dirty looks from the "How to Train Your Dragon" audience. But it's gotten decent reviews, and now I'm curious enough to think about seeing it. It's on my list behind about five others I haven't seen yet, though, so probably I'll miss it anyway.
