Chaz Bono Granted Name, Gender Change

SANTA MONICA, Calif. -- Chaz Bono is officially a man and has his new name.

A judge on Thursday granted a request to change the name and gender of the 41-year-old writer, activist and reality TV star. Chaz Bono was born a girl to Sonny Bono and Cher and underwent a gender-change operation last year.

Life is soooo cruel for Transexual people. I've know about 5 or six, mostly men who're now women, and they've gone through more unnecessary pain than almost anyone else I've ever seen. There's still so much misunderstanding and judgment, it's just heartbreaking. If we can believe that genetics is responsible for our sexual orientation, why is it so difficult to understand that some people really are born in the wrong bodies? We all start out as female when we're embryonic, then genetics kicks in and we continue as girls or depending on the genetic code, become boys. During that embryonic development, isn't it possible that a genetic switch could be activated and a child ends up with a brain wired to the opposite sex of its body?

We fix spinal bifida and clef palates, why would we balk at gender reassignment?

Thanks for your thoughtful comment, too. The "genetic switch" malfunction makes sense to me. I can't really imagine how difficult it must be to be convinced that you're in the "wrong" body. All my best wishes to Chaz and everyone who is struggling with this condition.
