Everett Massachusetts students OK after ingesting dry ice

Three Everett six graders have been released from the hospital after they ingested a mixture of dry ice in response to a dare from classmates working on a science experiment at the Sumner G. Whittier School, a school official said.

The students ingested the dry ice in a science lab at about 10 a.m. yesterday while mixing dry ice with water and salt to create carbon dioxide, said Assistant Superintendent Charles Obremski.

Obremski said one student dared two male classmates to ingest the mixture, which they did. Another student then dared a third male classmate to swallow it. After consuming the mixture, one of the students began having trouble breathing, Obremski said.

The students were taken to Children’s Hospital where they were treated and released. He added two of the students were released soon after arriving at the hospital. A third student was treated with oxygen and discharged at about 3:30 p.m.

Ancient parental unit argument. Irrefutable.
There is clearly a reason for childhood.

5. In cold climates...
one can always find a kid or two with their tongues stuck to a frozen tether ball pole in the schoolyard.

Swallowing dry ice is not really not recommended.

7. Perhaps this is a good place for a long rambling and well-intentioned but
pedantic and unnecessary lecture on why you should not eat dry ice, for the benefit of any DUers who are so seized with curiosity that they are clutching their carkeys and about to walk out the door to go buy a big block of dry ice to chip of bits to eat

The first fact to bear in mind is that your ancestors evolved fruits and nuts and whatever leafy thing looked tasty when they were starving on the savannah and fish and stuff like that. Dry ice does not resemble anything on their menu, because it was nowhere to be found because it only exists here on earth at temperatures below -100F. Also dry ice has no nutritive value. There is a simple slogan that can help you remember things like this, which is: IF IT IS NOT FOOD, DON'T EAT IT. As examples:

bagel? food! eat!
lightbulb? no food! no eat!
carrot? food! eat!
roach spray can? no food! no eat!
cheese cake? food! eat!
dry ice? no food! no eat!

It may seem tricky at first, but with a little practice almost anybody can get the knack, and following the slogan will seem easy

Now dry ice, as we have said, is very cold, and you should not handle it with your bare hands because you could frostburn your little fingers. So when you handle dry ice, use tongs. And you swallow dry ice, you might frostburn your stomach. Time for a quiz:

How can you avoid frostburn to your stomach?
(A) When you swallow dry ice, you should be sure also to swallow a pair of tongs
(B) Don't swallow dry ice

The correct answer is (B). If you got that wrong, go back and review the earlier part of the lecture: IF IT IS NOT FOOD, DON'T EAT IT

What will happen if you swallow dry ice, besides a very cold tummy? Well, you will shortly have a bloated tummy full of carbon dioxide gas. And that gas is going somewhere. And where it is going is into your blood stream, because one of the important things your blood stream does is say Hey! That looks like carbon dioxide! Let's grab it and go dump it in the lungs! So your blood stream will be full of carbon dioxide. And when your blood stream is full of carbon dioxide, your body tells your lungs, Hey! Breathe! We've got too much carbon dioxide here! We're suffocating! So your lungs are gonna be heaving trying to get rid of that carbon dioxide. And you're gonna feel like you're suffocating. Meanwhile, the rest of your body will be getting all chemically grumpy: WTF is this? Is this sparking water or something? Who ordered the fizzy drink? Where's my ordinary blood?

Let's summarize: IF IT IS NOT FOOD, DON'T EAT IT

8. There are other views on what that means.

Your comment,
IF IT IS NOT FOOD, DON'T EAT IT

Is not a concern to me.

So a movie quote where I can see Rambo in many ways, what it means and what values it could be about.

Trautman: You don't seem to want to accept the fact you're dealing with an expert in guerrilla warfare, with a man who's the best, with guns, with knives, with his bare hands. A man who's been trained to ignore pain, ignore weather, to live off the land, to eat things that would make a billy goat puke.

With love to those that fight for love and kindness for all.

(Note that my view on that is metaphoric, in my view it is about sharing love and kindness.)

15. People are blaming 12 year old boys for being dumb
One of the reasons we don't let children run around without adult supervision is because they do dumb things.

Any bets on whether or not Mr. Science explained that dry ice is not like frozen water and could be a bad idea to ingest?

I do indeed wish our kids were smarter than this but to blame a 12 year old for being dumb is.. well.. kind of dumb.

17. While I'm all for science education
Maybe they should not work with dangerous stuff like dry ice for a few more years? IIRC, the most dangerous thing I was allowed to play with at that age was a battery circuit that made a small bulb light up. And I do remember kids sticking the wires on their tongue to get the shock....
