To quote Steve Earle: "Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that."

2. I love that song but
that's about the worst version of it I've ever heard, and I've heard many. What's with the weird pop music in the background, anyway?

My earworm started on NPR this morning with a promo for today's Fresh Air:

3. Dude, that's like the definitive version!
Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard, off their duet album, titled Pancho and Lefty.

Admittedly, though, it's better in concert. I just figured I'd post the actual video.

In any case, I thought it was a suitable song for Cinco de Mayo. :)

6. I'll concede to better versions. The original Townes Van Zandt is pretty killer...

I like to hear Emmylou's earlier versions, too.

10. God damn, but the alcohol kicked the shit out of him.
I mean, that voice is just ravaged. Compare your 1993 clip with the original recorded version from 20 years earlier:

5. Heretic.
There ain't no one better than Willie, and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my Cowboy boots and proclaim it, too. :P

The music isn't that great, I'll admit, but Willie's performance more than makes up for that.

7. I've got a live tape of Butch Hancock doing a great version of this in some bar in Austin
but no versions of Butch on you tube; you'll all just have to take my word for it. Butch is a hell of a songwriter too...

I'd personally stand on anyone's coffee table and say Dylan's THE man, but Van Zandt WAS one of the greats. ( and Earle's no slouch either).

for all four of 'em.

No, really...I bet that Butch version really kicks ass.

Loves me some Butch...and some Jimmy Dale...and, sigh, some Joe Ely.
