The pumps were $150 each. The rest was labor. The last owner had all kinds of non-standard parts and fixes.

6. Yup. It is ironic, but too much is almost as bad as too little. nt

5. Previous owner may have been a landlord - our house had been
rented out, landlord "fixes" took us almost 10 years to find and fix right - still finding some after nearly 13 years here. If he could save a dime doing it wrong, he would do it...

9. True that
We are currently renting and most of the repairs to the house are disasters waiting to happen. Of course, some of them have already happened. When we moved in there was a large hole in the foundation at the back that my husband fixed. He mentioned it to the landlord and asked if the landlord would like to look at it. He wasn't interested. He is also pissed at us because just after we moved in we noticed that the tile in the bathtub area was falling off. The landlord sent the guy who mows his lawn (!) to take a look. The lawnmower guy was completely past his area of expertise and relied on what my husband told him - that the pipe to the shower head was leaking behind the wall. So landlord got another of his "friends" in to repair the tub. It took the guy and his helper several days to replace the pipe (which was rusted to hell and gone), let the wall area dry out and replace the drywall. This time they did use water resistant drywall made in the USA. We then noticed a damp spot on the ceiling in my daughter's bed room, so my husband went up on the roof and saw the incredibly bad repair to the roof around the chimney. It is probably leaking into the attic - but when he mentioned it to the landlord all the guy said was that he had had it repaired a few years before. The screening job on the porch was so badly done that we decided to redo it ourselves at our own expense so that we could actually use the front porch in the summer without getting bitten by mosquitos. The place could actually be nice, but it needs attention and money. We can give it some of the attention - it's the money that's the problem.

11. I only had to fix one sump pump--it was lined into the sanitary sewer
I did that last summer, so I forget the exact toal, but I think it was around five bills. THe new pump is much better and actually works though....
