Letting Mommie go.
Our sweet Mommie is dying, and I know I should help her along, but damnit, she's still playing occasionally, and eats just enough to stay alive. She's so frail, I watch her all the time, expecting her to fall over or hurt herself.

She only weighs about 4 lbs now (down from her fighting weight of 13 a while back. She's little more than fur & bones ..but she's determined to hobble herself along..

She quit grooming a while ago, and I cannot bring myself to try & brush the tangles out, since she's all bones now, and it hurts her.

I did try the clippers and managed to get too close & made the skin raw .. She did not even whimper, but it made ME cry:(

The vet says she's "winding down". She came to us as a stray (approximate age 2-3yrs old) back in 1994.

She was pregnant, and had 4 kitten (she has outlived ALL of them)

He says that she probably has a cancer somewhere inside, but at her age & in her condition, there's really nothing to do for her..

It is so painful to see her failing, and taking it in such good nature.

I find myself halfway hoping to find her in her favorite spot on the couch, comfortably gone...

Mommie , in her prime..

3. I have the identical story
I know how it feels.

My Large Marge came to us in 1995 so young and scared and pregnant. She had her three babies only one remains.

She is no longer Large. She is tiny little skinny thing with labored breathing and arthritis but she gets around. Eats like a champ. Manages to maintain her sense of humor by toying with the dog.

Like you, I will let her dictate when it is time for her to go. They have such dignity.

They will let us know.

Sigh. Be Strong, SoCalDem. She is a beautiful kitty.

5. That's the great injustice in loving a pet.
You share hearts & outlive them. Cherish her, she knows.

7. So sorry :(
Hang in there. I'm guessing you've shared lots of love over the years, and I'm sure she knows that.

My girl and I have a 1 year old Vizsla and I can't imagine what it's going to be like when he goes, even though it's (hopefully) many years away :(

Hope it's peaceful and easy for you both.

8. Oh, my goodness...
What a sweet little face!

Thank you so much for taking care of her over these years. For loving her and allowing her to have a safe environment, with warmth and food and love. I always want to "thank" those people who take in the strays. The ones who do it certainly don't expect thanks and don't need thanks, but people such as you are deserving of thanks because there are so many OTHER people out there who will ignore a stray, keep walking, allow it to suffer and forget about it.

Acts of kindness and generosity towards needy creatures elevate ALL of us and make us better human beings.

It's so sad to watch them as they fade. But there is comfort in those eyes, because she knows that she's loved and cherished. I'm so sorry that you've having to face this. I wish you and Mommie both peace and comfort.

9. She's a beauty. My Purrl went the same way, at 19.
We just made sure she was comfortable and warm, talked to her and stroked her, and let her go. She was a good, good cat. My son, who grew up with her, is a better man today for loving Purrl.

Peace to Mommie, and to you.

10. SoCalDem, I couldn't let my Tommy go, either

I couldn't make that last half hour drive to a place he hated and have that be his last memory. He died on a Monday morning last year; I miss him so much it still really hurts.

I completely understand what you're going through. to you and to Mommie. May she have a peaceful passing.

11. I was the same way with my Miss Kitty. One night, she
just crawled into my lap, gave one last snuggle, and then she was gone. Just broke my heart, but I am thankful for the 19 years she was a part of my life.
