Why won't Amazon sell me a newspaper subscription?

I was planning to get a Kindle subscription for a British paper (probably the Guardian) for the next month to keep up with the UK election, but apparently their newspaper and magazine item only work on an actual Kindle reader, not a Kindle app for the iPad. I've had no problem downloading and reading books; can't figure out why there'd be a limitation.
