3. Sister Ray - the Velvet Underground
I could only find it in 2 parts on YouTube - it is 17 and a half minutes long after all.

Part 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDtqbS7DK2s

Part 2: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2EfSapCA5ls

(There's no bass - the low notes are John Cale on the organ, and he lays into a melt-your-face-off solo just a couple minutes in)

19. A friend of mine
said the organ is really some sort of processed electric viola played by cale. When I said - "the organ on this is good"

23. No, it's not.
I play violin and viola. I WISH Cale had used his viola more (My all-time favorite VU tracks are "Venus In Furs" and "Heroin") Cale was really a pianist at heart, though, and this is all organ.

I bonded on this with my ex, who is a classically-trained pianist and Farfisa garage rocker. I actually kind of think some of our sex life was based on both wanting to be Cale by proxy. Nevertheless, we know the difference.

I have no idea what a sex life based on wanting to be John Cale by proxy would be like, but it sounds fun.

27. Just make sure it's John Cale in the 60s
Edited on Sun Mar-21-10 12:46 AM by Withywindle
That pretty long-haired Welsh-accented boy who came out of the John Cage avant-garde scene...kind of relatively naive, still burning from Aaron Copland's hand on his knee....(Read his autobiography, it really happened.)

It's not really about him personally. It's about the way his viola sounds on 'Venus in Furs.' Most. Erotic. Single. Musical. Sound. Ever.

But the piano/organ was really his greatest weapon. That's him at the end of "Waiting For the Man" too.

Fear and Slow Dazzle are VERY high on my list of favorite albums of all time.

Alright, what do you want me to admit?

That I'd gladly nail him even now? No shit, Sherlock.

But I STILL would beg him to play viola, either before or after, his choice. :D

32. Truth be told, my favorite incarnation of John Cale
was the one who worked so hard as a producer, arranger and instrumentalist for Nico on The Marble Index, Desertshore, and The End.

Even though her voice was clunky, it was so sincere, and his arrangements were SO intense. Especially 'Das Lied der Deutschen' on 'The End," which was like some kind of fucked up sexy WWII catharsis.

'Marble Index'
'Desertshore'

(Cale produced and played most instruments on the first two; Eno and Manzanera of Roxy Music weighed in on the latter.)

Nothing else mentioned so far even comes close to comparing. It is one of the most sampled pieces of music ever recorded.
