Stat question: Nose bleed, acute!
How to stop? I'm way out in the wilds, alone.

1. Hold tissue to nose and press on upper lip. A nurse told me a long

time ago that the upper lip is a blood supply area and pressing on it may slow down or stop a nose bleed. Call or go to doctor immediately!

Good luck! Hugs,Laura

2. Try some vaseline in your nose
It actually works sometimes, no kidding. Also, ice at the side of your nose might help.

7. For the future...
I have a l-o-n-g history of really bad nose bleeds, that would restart constantly. Was finally told the tricks that now work for me always:

1) Pinch your nose tight with a tissue or cold washcloth

2) Don't tilt your head backwards, lean forward instead (other wise the blood just goes down the back of your throat)

3) Hold the tissue/cloth for 10 minutes WITHOUT moving it -- don't be tempted to "take a peek" -- this way a clot can form

4) Add ice to the back of your neck and forehead if it's a bad one

One think to watch for is a "nose bleed" where the blood is bypassing your nose and flowing directly down the back of your throat -- that's not really a nose bleed, and you HAVE to get to an emergency room/doctor ASAP. I woke up with one of those and (stupidly) fought for an hour to get it under control. I found out later from a doctor that kind of bleed can actually kill you.

8. I had that condition a few years back.
swallowed a lot of blood. Completely misdiagonesed for 2 weeks. Was seriously running out of gas....went to the ER, promptly puked up a stomach full of blood. Doctor saw that and I was in the OR about 6 hours later. Ended up being s busted blood vessel way up around the optic nerves. Nothing to fool around with, especially if it isn't something that hasn't a direct cause (running into a fist, etc).

10. Glad you got it stopped. For future reference,
my son used to get nosebleeds frequently. The best thing is - ready? - a Preparation H suppository stuffed into the nostril. First of all, it's a vaso-constrictor, second it's soothing, third it packs the nostril. Leave it there until the bleeding has stopped and it is melting. Everybody laughs when I tell them this, but it really works! Keep some on hand in your first aid kit.

The boys used to laugh like loons when someone would get a nosebleed from a tackle...
