8. I'm currently attending Wright State University
I'm 31 and I am returning to finish up my degree that I started when I was younger. There's a lot of pressure involved, especially if you want to get good grades, but I wouldn't trade it for what I was doing six months ago, which was driving trucks. I guess you could say I'm enjoying it.

I'm 47. I thought I was too stupid for college.

And at this age, I'd look like an idiot if I tried.

Plus, I can't afford it. I'm drowning in debt right now.

Yippee. My life.

I've met people who are older than you that are attending my college. I'm 31 and I'm finishing up my undergraduate degree. A lot of people go to college later in life. Some for career change, others just to enrich their lives.

22. Try a Community College. There are lots of older students in CCs...
In the class I took two summers ago, there were two students not long out of high school, two in their mid to late twenties, and the rest were closer to fifty than 30...

It was a great class!

It's amazing how they flourish. I love them and am very patient with them. They get lots of attention from me (especially computer classes). I understand how they feel.

12. Ya know, undergrad school, I was just there -
really pretty much lost, didn't study much, didn't enjoy it that much to tell the truth. graduated, etc, then at age 30 entered grad school, spent 8 years there - it was a blast! Stimulating, fascinating stuff, great learning environment, life-long friends. And I knew what I wanted to do - could be that made a difference. Also, undergrad was in Indianapolis, grad was in Seattle - that definitely made a difference.

15. Yes I went to college. Did I enjoy it? Yes and no.
Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 06:39 PM by Ladyhawk
Yes: I learned quite a lot and I very much enjoy learning. I am a thirsty sponge when it comes to certain types of information. I'm especially interested in the biological and wildlife sciences; writing; art; and music. I also use too many semi-colons. And too many hyphens. And too many sentence fragments. (Nod to earlier thread.)

No: As a result of my learning, I lost my fundamentalist Christian world view and all of my "lifelong friends." I'm still reeling at the betrayal. I'm still trying to find an anchor in the chaos of reality.

21. Flagler College
Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 06:48 PM by 1monster
and two summers ago St. Johns River Community College for a post graduate course.

Yes, I enjoyed it, but had a hard time working full time and going to classes full time, so I didn't enjoy it as much as I could have nor did I take full advantage of the opportunity.

I thoroughly enjoyed my course at SJRCC and am looking forward to taking other courses, both pre and post graduate, there.

I know that I took my grades more seriously at SJRCC than I did nearly 30 years ago at Flagler. And I got soo much out of the course.

I think perhaps we start college to early. We need to be out in the real world for a few years in order to appreciate the great learning opportunity college really is. It would be nice if the way we attend college could be restructured so that it was the norm to spread college out over more than four years to fit into our need to balance making a living and raising a family. (Maybe day and evening child care facilities on campus? :) )

edit for grammatical clarity

I was married at 16 and never finished high school. I had 2 children by the time I was 23, and was divorced by the time I was 25. But I am now in a position which requires a college degree, so I guess the School of Hard Knocks pays off, plus I didn't have to pay any college tuition.

Loved it, all of them.

I worked through all of it, and was married for my last two schools(the UT schools). Never lived the "college life--" never had that type of material comfort. I never really thought that those who did live that life got much out of college, either, but hey, maybe I just never liked drinking much.

The learning part was all I wanted.

48. I graduated with my B.A. from California State University
when I was 41 years old. I'm now 46. It was, without question, the most life enriching experience I've ever had. Having gone back as an adult, I was enthralled with almost all of my classes, had great professors, and was so turned on by what I was learning. I had an appreciation that I don't think I would have had if I had gone right out of high school. I worked full-time, took a full load every semester (except one) and completed my A.A. and B.A. in five years. It's the proudest accomplishment of my life. Oh yea, I was in a program designed for full-time working adults so I was with people my age and older. One of the ladies got her degree at 62! 47 is not too old if you have the passion.

I graduated from Ursinus College with a degree in economics. Ursinus was difficult for a commuter student, but my GPA ended up ok. It was hard to get into the social scene as a commuter student, and there's a phony closeness to the place. Like an advanced high school. Got lots of Cs from professors like O'Neill. But I think of it like the degree is what counts.

53. Yep. Purdue University.
Class of '85.

Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

But I'm not an 'enginerd'. (No offense to engineers. They are a different species than 'enginerds'.)

Spent most of my career in architecture and interior design, though. Not as lucrative, but more creative and more fun, IMHO.

Did I enjoy my experience. Yeah, I guess. But if I had the chance to do it all over again, I would have chosen a different school, more than likely...
