And now for the RANT: Damn his family who all his life literally treated him as the red-headed stepchild and even in death. Buunch of RW fundy nuts(who are so nuts they think Bob Jones University is a "LIBERAL" institution). No mention of his death in the paper, no services, no nothing. At least he's getting a funeral at the VA. And they're already scheming how to get his property. Which is going to bite them on the ass because he left a will cutting them out completely-they don't know that yet. It was filed 5 years ago at his county courthouse.

At least from your description of him, it sounds like he lived a good life though, including overcoming a family full of apparently mean spirited idiots. I hope that impression of him, and the life he lived, is accurate. It'd be far too inappropriate to post the ROFL icon but that's what I'm thinking about regarding his cutting all the fundie family out of the will. Good for him, especially because he left it for a nice surprise after leaving this world. And I too hope you can dwell on happy memories of him.

They say every end is a beginning. If this is so, I hope your next journey began well. In my mind I see you kickin' it with Marine buddies who went before you, and everyone else whose passing you yourself mourned. And don't worry my friend, DU will be looking out for your friend hobbit.

My condolences to you hobbit. I know what it's like to lose a lifelong friend. I lost a childhood buddy to liver cancer this last March and still get misty when I think about it. Wherever your friend Woody is, I'm sure he's in good hands.
