when I asked if he was a Girondist, I was thinking of Danton, then thought he was a girondist, tho I knew danton led the...d'oh... Dantonists and was guillotined.

Have you ever seen the movie, Danton, with Depardieu? I loved that movie. And The Madness of King George. For some reason they seemed to go together.

Yes, I've seen the Danton movie (as well as Madness of King George. I read somewhere that Depardieu achieved his haggard look as Danton by being drunk through the filming.
