America's Worst French Fries (and What You Should Eat Instead!)

By David Zinczenko, with Matt Goulding - Posted on Mon, Feb 22, 2010, 11:21 am PST

In spite of the name, French fries are practically an American birthright. They’re offered as the first choice side dish with nearly every fast-food and sit-down chain meal available. But here’s the catch: In a recent study of 7,318 New York City patrons leaving fast food chains during the lunch hour, researchers learned that combo meals—meaning meals with sides—averaged 1,100 calories each, which is over half a day’s allotment. It goes to show: When your regular meals at these restaurants are already pushing the nutritional envelope, adding an extra 300 (or more!) empty calories can make for a dietary disaster.

The authors of the best-selling weight-loss series Eat This, Not That! and Cook This, Not That! have rounded up three of the worst orders of fries available at chain restaurants across the country. We’ve also offered up the surprising winner of the fast food French fry cook-off—you’ll never believe which restaurant chain produces the healthiest fried spuds!

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Don't take away my one pleasure in life. I :loveya: Arby's Curly Fries - I love smothering them in Horsey Sauce (which btw is made with High Fructose Corn Syrup).

My guilty pleasure

6. Wow,
Lying in bed before school this morning we were discussing our favorite fries. My 9 year old saidn "Hands down, Arby's curly fries." She doesn't get to eat them often but will definatly keep an eye on those snacks with older sisters.

12. They have a restaurant here in Pittsburgh.
I actually don't like their fries. And now I definitely won't be eating any in the future, now that I know I'm adding 1464 extra calories to my ass for bad fries.

17. Five Guys gives you waaaaay too many fries for your own good.
Their burgers are excellent, some of the best that you'll find in fast food chains, but their fries are rather mediocre and overwhelming.

But Five Guy's burgers kick ass. If you have one in your area and are up to indulging yourself, try it out.

27. I agree.
The burgers are really tasty, and just about as bad for you as you would expect from a fast-food burger (yes, I looked up nutritional info once). Totally worth eating once in a while.

The fries on the other hand - yech. Very greasy, somewhat tasteless, and just...too much. Overwhelming is a good word for them.

33. We always split our 5 Guys fries order between at least 2 people.
The cashiers even tell people not to order individual bags of fries.

11. Oddly enough, McDonald's was rated as the best fries
in terms of fast food fries, anyway.

But I agree that the curly fries are way tastier. Rally's/Checker's fries are damn good, too.

13. "Worst" as in bad for you. Not "worst" as in worst.
Arby's fries are damn good. Hardee's used to have similar fries.

Anything with seasoning is a thumbs up in my book.

We're talking french fries, kids, if you're worried about nutrition, go find some free-range sprouts.

19. french fries ARE fattening, all of them, it's a fast food joint fer sakes
Indulge in the occasional Arby's curlie fries (they are the best of all frydom IMHO)....just don't eat there every single day every meal....Way back when, these Mcdonalds, burger king etc was more a place to get the shake/hamburger on a friday night, it was a treat type thing, now people are eating there all the time.

It is an order of In-n-Out Burger's Animal Style Fries: french fries with grilled onions, melted cheese and Thousand Island dressing.

31. I'm pretty sure that's In-and-Out Burger's Chili Fries...
.
... with Thousand Island Dressing.
.
Never thought I'd actually be intrigued by anything
with "curd" as a major ingredient (though I like
cottage cheese with pineapple), but poutine LOOKS
like I could just roll around in it.
.
.
Grew up in Michigan, where the BIG diner comfort
food was roast beef or turkey or breaded veal cutlet
sandwiches on white bread and fries -- all SMOTHERED
in beef gravy.
.
M-m-m-m, boy-HOWDY them's good eatin's!!!!
