wow. i might be "inheriting" 2 wood kilns. am i ready?
so, i have some friends out in galena, an old mississippi river town about 3 hours from chicago. clay people. good people.
several of them have a co-op of a big wood kiln and a wood/salt kiln that have been most graciously hosted on a small farm for the last 9 years. now, i know from other experience that artist co-op is an oxymoron. they do great things, sometimes for a long time, but eventually the egos involved make it either implode or explode. this one did a little of both. the folks that own the farm want their "front yard" back from the potters, and have evicted the kilns.

well, as luck would have it, DH and i have been talking for a long time about finding a little plot of land out there somewhere. nothing fancy, just a place to plop our little trailer. a little electricity, maybe, a well, good. an out house. 'bout all that was in the plan. maybe a little cabin or a frame. a shed. couple acres.
we have been looking around, and in fact, had been out there 2 weeks ago scouting a site. part of the plan was that i could buy into this co-op and could go out there and work and fire. but they are breaking up.
so, i offered to let them move to whatever plot we buy if it was suitable, and to my surprise they said yes.
most of the troubles that the old site had would just evaporate with the kilns located in the middle of nowhere instead of someone's front yard. and having someone who sort of owns the thing would also change the co-op dynamic that is so problematic.
lots of details to be worked out, but there is a lot of cheap property out there right now, and i am trying not to get to excited.

but this is just too cool.
