I really like/want the chickens to be able to work in the corrals. I do lock them up at night. They were doing fine as long as a lot if cattle were coming in to water and salt, but we had lots of rain and cloudy days the last few weeks and the cows just don't come hang around in that kind of weather so the coyote(s?) were coming right in to the corral during the day. A bunch of them disappeared in the last week. They have a pen as well as the coop, and we tried to keep the hens in the last few days but it doesn't have a top and today even the big barred rocks flew out. Dang. Not sure what to do. Weather is drying so most likely I will do exactly nothing but complain!:rofl:

8. Sounds like it's time to clip some wings.

Something else that might work is what I did when our hens were very young and targets for the hawks, I would take twine and run it back and forth along the top of the pen in all kinds of weird patterns and tie it off good each time so it would be strong enough. It made it so the hawks didn't have a clear landing into the pen so they didn't even try. And if you leave just a little play in the twine, it isn't strong enough for the hens to get a foothold and use it to fly over the fence. Maybe something like that might work for you?

Can't do too much about the coyotes except keep a dog near by or a mule. I've read that mules will keep the coyotes out.

11. hey - finally a use for baling twine, maybe!

the dogs have fooled my son into allowing them to be house dogs so they are utterly useless anymore. Burros work good too - they hate coyotes. Of course the last Burro we had wouldn't stay home - she wanted to be out with the cows!

I think wing clipping might be worth a try. Their pen has a couple of mesquites in it and they have been trimmed to make a pretty good canopy so hawks and things don't really get into it from above, but the chickens kind of fly up to the top from the inside.

I need to find some already grown, laying hens - the babies are so cute, but waiting 5 or 6 months for eggs and then losing them so fast is so irritating.

12. Clipping wings is pretty easy

if you have someone to help. If you hold the chickens upside down by their feet they stop moving altogether and the second person can do the clipping real quick.

No doubt those mesquite are their ladder to freedom. LOL We had to make sure there wasn't anything in the pen or in the garden when they are allowed to roam through there that would give them any height advantage toward the top of the fence at all.
