10. I've got to be honest here...
I don't know enough about it to know that widespread GM use is safe for us or the environment.

13. Its the same technology that is used to make DNA vaccines
and THOSE have been proven safe over and over again and injected directly into the blood stream. Don't let the genetics is evil crowd fool you. I've yet to find a SCIENTIFIC study that is convincing that they are harmful

15. I'm concerned about unintended environmental consequences.
Suppose Big Agro makes a pest resistant variety of wheat. Unfortunately, it turns out to be inedible. Perhaps its an allergen. My understanding is that our knowledge of how DNA actually works is pretty limited, so I don't think we can really conclude that this is impossible. Now suppose that modification is a dominant trait. And suppose it gets out. The result is in 20 years that there is no edible wheat in the world.

My concern is not so much with genetic science, but its practical applications. Considering that we once sprayed children with DDT to keep mosquitoes and ticks away, I think my concern over human hubris is at least understandable. We have a pretty shitty track record when it comes to planning ahead. Maybe I'm wrong. I would be happy to know that I am. I just have not seen any real evidence that it is safe in practice. AFAIK, GM food is not subject to the extensive oversight that vaccines are. Or is that not true?

23. Let's say that Henry Ford mass produces Model Ts on an assembly line.
Then soon all sorts of companies make motorized vehicles and suddenly they're everywhere.

Then a mysterious comet passes close to the earth and makes all the vehicles sentient and they start killing people, just like in that Stephen King documentary "Maximum Overdrive."

People don't really understand internal combustion engines. There's no oversight of this industry. We just don't know what the consequences will be.

17. for free-market types some of these big companies sure hate the market
people don't want the shit, why shove it down their throats? Its like in my "industry" - beef - sure implants allow a little extra growth and are undetectable and more than likely are harmless, but they aren't NEEDED, and people - the fucking CUSTOMERS - don't want that shit associated with their food so why do it? I don't get it. Just because something gets invented doesn't mean it HAS to be used.

19. I'm concerned about the loss of biodiversity in windblown crops, notably corn and canola,
as the result of introduction and proliferation of GMO strains. I'm also concerned about farmers who are being charged for use of GMO strains they did not plant due to cross-pollination with nearby GMO crops.

I prefer local, organic crops because they're better for farmers. Luckily I have that option because I'm in a city surrounded by some of the best farmland on earth.

22. There are thousands of year old locally-adapted strains of corn that are being lost
Notably in Mexico. Maintaining that reserve of diverse genes in an important crop is especially important in a changing climate, we may need them in the future.

30. the loss is more attributable to NAFTA and globalization in general
than GMO's but the loss is real, nevertheless.

great monocultures of whatever is deemed most productive/efficient or whatever terminology you want, basically saying most advantageous to large scale corporate ag-business rather than local small sustainable DIVERSE crops are causing the main losses of crop diversity and rural communities. This applies to animals as well as plant crops.
