The BlueIris Semi-Nightly Poetry Break, 2/9/10
"Nothing Ventured"

Nothing exists as a block
and cannot be parceled up.
So if nothing's ventured
it's not just talk;
it's the big wager.
Don't you wonder
how people think
the banks of space
and time don't matter?
How they'll drain
the big tanks down to
slime and salamanders
and want thanks?

2. "Ladybug's Children"
Ladybug's Children

("It's going too fast. We will burn."--James Lovelock, inventor of the Gaia Hypothesis, on global warming.)

"Ladybug,ladybug, fly away home!
Your house is on fire, your children will burn!"
--children's rhyme

and so I think of ladybug's children
looking like miniature dragons, all fierce grasp
and bright warning, ugly babies
stripping the tree of its aphids
and I think
of their tiny fragile feet curling
their little dragon tails shrivelling
little dragon eyes going dim
the orange tongues eating little dragons

"The roof the roof the roof is on fire
We don't need no water let the motherfucker burn
Burn motherfucker burn"
--Bloodhound Gang, "Fire Water Burn," 1996

and I think
of the song about the roof
and how we don't need no water and
I look up

the roof is blue
but the flames, the flames are all around us
