8. also, 'no woman no cry'
by bob marley. nothing against him i have a huge amount of respect for him.

but anytime this comes on in a bar, it provokes a horrid, drunken sing-along from every frat boy who fancies themselves mildly hippie-esque, usually accompanied by a barely intelligible "i looove this song, man"

Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 12:45 PM by CBHagman
A few years ago, I was flying on Christmas Eve to join my sister and her family for the holidays. I got on the plane with a really bad cold and was well on my way to full-blown laryngitis. The last leg of the journey was on a small plane to Flint, Michigan, and the flight attendant on board decided to have some fun for the benefit of a small child on board. She played a music box version of "The Little Drummer Boy" (just the chorus, mind you) and had the pilots making ho-ho noises in the cockpit. I heard that music box tune for so long that I was losing my will to live.

Then again, there are a LOT OF annoying tunes, many of which are available on the cell phone of the person sitting nearest to you on the train or bus. :-)

12. It's hard to choose just one...
How about "Wildfire," a horrible mid-70's song about some dumb horse running out into the freezing cold and dying (or something. I could never listen long enough to be sure).

Runner-up: Another dreadful 70's classic about a father who didn't spend enough time with his son, then...GUESS WHAT?...the son grows up and doesn't have enough time for his dad. HA! I guess he showed him! Does anyone remember the name of that???

For months in my workplace I have been subjected to the mediocre radio choices of my peers. "I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell, Blah blah..." :nuke: :argh:

I am capable of removing someone's lungs and smashing them with a red-hot hammer dipped in acid, then replacing them upside down.

101. I can't take credit!
It comes from the old "Bloom County" comic strip by Berke Breathed. The character "Bill the Cat" occasionally bazooka-barfed, particularly while he was playing electric tongue in the "Death Tongue/Billy and the Boingers" band.

If didn't read this strip in the '80s, I recommend that you get ahold of one of the soft-cover compilations. Hilarious!

I know a few songs that make me want to fall over and die.

Like:

The Barney Song

Some dumb song that says "I've been shattered like a rose on my death bed" over and over and then starts screaming like a maniac, then the song ends.

And then there's people like Eminem and Jay-Z, or whatever his name is, and people like Britney Spears :puke: or Christina Aguilara who make me wanna scream and throw my radio out the window. They're freaking lyrics don't even makes sense and all the girls do is dance around with their rears hanging out.

So, there you go... :)

124. It's all in the context.
My first husband liked to play his current favorites all day, every day, for months...until he found something else that caught his attention, and then we'd listen to that.

I listened to George Jones every day for years, and that was one of his favorites. I was not a George Jones fan. Or a fan of Hank Williams Jr. But I lived with them 24/7.

I even eventually became sick of Tom Petty, and I was a fan.

I remember it was like 1979 and I was hanging out at a pizza place in S. Cal, playing "Space Invaders" on one of the first video games at the time. "My Sharona" was played endlessly either on the radio feed or on the jukebox. After awhile, it was just worst than ever, and my addiction to Space Invaders finally waned as I couldn't take that song anymore.

Edited on Wed Mar-24-04 10:57 AM by DiverDave
When I first started driving a big truck, my trainer got the mini tape, with that and the instrumental version on the flip side.
I swear to god he wore that thing out, I would be in the bunk with earplugs to not hear it.
I get a stomach ache when I here it now.

61. Barney? I have to disagree with that one
My oldest daughter and I used to watch Barney together. Not much chance of stimulation watching any kids' show, but when the first song your three year old daughter learns includes her looking at you and singing "I love you, you love me, we're a happy family" it's impossible not to get a bit teary-eyed at the song.

And I'd vote for "Betty Davis Eyes" in your poll, with a close second to "Proud to be an American."

Now that I think about it, it's really not the most annoying song. I watched Barney with my mom and I used to sing that song all the time and then she would sing it back to me.

63. Not just a song, ABBA's Greatest Hits
stuck with four women in a 1974 Ford LTD on a road trip from Winnepeg, Manitoba to Minneapolis, Minnesota I was subjected to ABBA's greatest hits played over-and-over-and-over the entire 8 hours of the drive while my stoned female companions sang along lyrics at the top of their lungs. That was ten years ago, I've yet to recover.

74. Anything by:
-The hated Eagles
-Billy Joel
-Paul McCartney post-Beatles (excepting "Jet")
-for that matter, 90% of McCartney's Beatles songs after 1965
-The Grateful Dead
-U2 (other than the near-classic albums "Boy" and "Achtung Baby")
-Phish
-Sting
-The Moody Blues (with one exception, "Hey Now")
-Eric Clapton (solo -- I do like Cream)
-other wankers with Stratocasters who think they're playing the "blues."
-Rush
-Triumph
-Bryan Adams
-okay, most Canadian music
-post-1990 Metallica and Megadeth
-Crosby, Stills, and Nash (any group Neil Young could not make good REALLY SUCKS!)
-Any band named after a geographical location (Boston, Chicago, Kansas)
-Seal
-Dream Theater, Savatage, Fates Warning (eyesroll likes prog-metal :scared:)
-Sheryl Crow
-Kid Rock
-Kid Rock featuring Sheryl Crow
-Sheryl Crow featuring Kid Rock
-The Doors, when Morrison sings something stupid (about half their songs)
-Jimmy Fucking Buffett
-Whatever Screaming Lord Byron Likes

And, of course: Celine Dion, Kenny G, Yanni, Michael Bolton, Billy Ray Cyrus, Vanilla Ice -- but those hacks are no harder on my ears than the "artists" listed above.

79. I was gonna say Having my Baby is the most annoying to me
but good lord, you have covered a lot of turf and I couldn't resist arguing with you! I actually have some time to argue today for a change.

I like Phish.. think they are very talented. A bit Grateful Dead like, but talented. Some older Dead ( that amuses me for some reason) is very good.

I do like Sheryl Crow... older, great voice, good songwriter, I think? and nice harmonies. Usually I don't like anything that anything that mainstream, but for her I make an exception. As a woman musician I feel that other women who have talent deserve my support.

Seals' the Rose is very beautiful.. don't know about his other songs. ( yeah sentimental)

I do like Sting's philosophical stuff( Jung- inspired stuff like Soul Cages)I think he is also a very talented player arranger and writer. I guess I have to admit I am somewhat of a sentimentalist. (blush)

80. You quote TMBG in your sig line, and think Sheryl Crow is a...
...good songwriter?

Her stuff is bland pap. The kind of stuff Neil Sedaka used to write (and now we're full-circle to "Having My Baby").

I agree with you that Phish is comprised of very talented instrumentalists. However, their songs are entirely devoid of (what can tritely be described as) SOUL! Not to mention, their lyricist (at least on their earlier stuff -- I haven't heard Phish since about '93) is abominable.

I was specifically thinking of "Kiss from a Rose" when I listed Seal. I actually don't mind "Crazy" nearly so much -- I mean, it was overplayed in the day, it's a dreadful earworm, and again -- no passion; but it's not nearly so treacly.

Sting? Sorry, I can't think of anything good to say about Sting. I don't even like most Police songs. He WAS wonderfully creepy in "Dune," I'll give him that.

I like sentiment if done right, if it feels honest. I don't like songs that are written in an attempt to stir sentiment, however -- I like those that are written FROM sentiment within the composer.

And I see where you are going trying to support female musicians. Make sure to give props to those female visionaries who have been unfairly maligned over the years -- Yoko Ono, Lydia Lunch (the Teenage Jesus and the Jerks record is brilliant). Not to mention such women as Kim Gordon, the folks in Sleater-Kinney, Neko Case -- critical darlings, yes, but still widely unknown.

Then again, plenty of "critical darlings" are crap. Just ask Random Koolzip. *ducks*
