Son's new band's first YouTube video....
They're brand new at this, so gentle yet constructive comments would probably help them.

It's not really my cup of musical tea; but I think they've done a great job for their first clip.

1. Also not my cup of tea, but they did a great job of producing the
clip. Amazing what can be done now, as I remember the 70s 80s garage band days.

If I had a small constructive comment I would urge liberal use of dry ice fog and hot girls.

I told you I trip back to the 70s 80s.

Congrats to your son and his friends.

3. The music isn't my type of music
but I did like the bass.

The recording is pretty cool too, they were having fun weren't they.

9. I'm hoping he'll tweak it up next time...
They were recording their audio with the video camera, so they couldn't really mix it properly.

20. not bad audio for a video camera - you could actually here the vocals, which
isn't always the case.

8. I'm sure they were having fun....
I just found out that the audio was recorded on their video camera, which probably explains why the mix wasn't refined...

14. Hey, for a first time I think it was great.
Listen to an early live recording of the Beatles (that has been cleaned up some, I might add).

I remember someone gave me an album of their early recordings from Hamburg several years back. I played it once, and not all the way through either.

10. Does she really?
Or are you just teasing her?

Columbia had their Young Soloist Competition a couple of weeks ago. One of the winners is playing the last movement of the Tchaikovsky concerto!

And I love it! Excellent! Excellent! Excellent!

Now for the gentle and constructive...

Song: I thought the song was way too short, but it's your song, not mine.

Sound: The inaudible bass part was frustrating. (You can fix the sound and recording problems as you move ahead.)

Sight: I liked the visual of the tightly packed band space.

Good job. I want more.

:headbang:

Which is perfect for that type of music!

15. I do too
It's going to be interesting to watch them develop, they are still pretty rawbut the more time they spend with it the better they will get. The most important thing is that they have fun and get along. If they have those elements going for them they have the kind of cohesion to make the band into a tight unit with some longevity. :)

12. good job, especially considering ...
the conditions they had to record this in.

There's definately an audience for this. Good luck to your son and his bandmates. Nothing more fun than being in a band, especially when you're young & horny...

Interesting, the singer looks like Darius Rucker! Nice drumming and it's not all screamo like some of that music is. I like it! My son would like it, I think.

but wait, where's the classical offspring? :D

19. Not so good today...
Some kind of stomach bug.

Other than that, pretty good. Busy, though not always with stuff that pays, unfortunately.

How about you? Have you had a lot of snow?

21. ah, I have a cold that is lingering, probably due to all the craziness going on -
my dad is in the hospital, I'm busy looking for high schools for my son for next year, with work and other stuff. It's been kind of wild the last 2 weeks.

Otherwise, ok, not a lot of snow since it all melted about a week ago. There was quite a bit and it kept snowing and snowing for weeks before that. It was funny to finally see the sidewalk after it all melted!

That can be really stressful, and tough on the immune system. I hope you both get well soon!

We're expecting more this weekend. It's been a long time since we had so much snow in one season!

23. They're already better than every metalcore band I've ever heard.
Edited on Wed Feb-03-10 07:45 PM by Forkboy
And I AM serious. They're bringing some different elements into the music and not relying on what so many young bands are trying to milk these days. That song was fresher and more urgent than half the new stuff I've heard this year (and trust me when I say I've heard a lot....at least 100 new bands in the last year alone). If they keep their head into the music and don't go for the popularity contest stuff I see only better music coming next. I also love the vid in the practice space...a nice garage band feel, always a plus for me.

I definitely liked it, and would gladly listen to more. My tastes actually go more extreme than that, but I could groove to that stuff easily. Reminded me of Cutthroats 9 or Unsane in ways, never a bad comparison.

28. I couldn't really say. I've only listened to ICP a few times.
I do hear hints of many lesser known bands I am familiar with, from doom bands like Yob (which they probably won't even hear themselves, but if these guys ever sound like that I'll be their #1 fan) to bands like Cutthroats 9 and even a dash of mellow Converge perhaps. I hope they go more experimental. The doominess is just lurking under the hood, ready to be unleashed, and mixed with the gritty sound they have could be deadly. That song could have gone another 7 or 8 minutes without offending me. :)

I remember that he had one of their cds on his Xmas list last year.
The looks on people's faces when a 50 year old woman asks for Insane Clown Posse are totally video-worthy.

30. I would bet.
I'm 50 in April and I constantly surprise people with my tastes.

Example? I'm obsessed with early Ice T and I also love Jay Z. My sister, six years older, and many of my friends think I'm a total nut.

31. If something is a challenge to appreciate..
...it usually offers a bigger reward than those things we readily accept. I listen to a band called Deathspell Omega that had me lost for a good three years, then last year it all fell into place and now I would rank them among the very best of bands I listen to (I wouldn't advise checking them out to verify their coolness though lol). I struggled with it for years and then one song clicked and suddenly it all kicked my ass. To me, music that challenges me is a plus.

On the other hand, things that I know right off the bat usually fade quickly. By listen #10 I'm already sick of it because it's too easy to learn, too easy to get into, where the bands that challenge me consistently force me to reevaluate my own thinking, and forces me to ask, "Why do I like this?" I almost always find an answer to that question. I'm 42 now and I hope I never sink to that mode where I'm only into what I'm already into.

My father is 67 and he listens to Metallica. Now, if only I could get him into black metal! :)

Not so much into angry rock, I'm more of a Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies or Social Distortion guy, but they were tight and who doesn't love a 5 stringed bass player in a golden mask?

32. I loved it. My husband is in a cover band and I hear tons of bands all the time.
Lot of original ones have played with them at Toad's Place (in New Haven, CT). I have heard some godawful bands in my time. This is good stuff. Love the name too.

33. Pretty darn good for a first effort
Here's the critique:

The audio is WAY too compressed. It's hard
to differentiate the instruments, especially
the bass. Yeah, the equipment is is expensive.
But with time and practice, they'll be able to
afford it. Good luck, guys! A non-alcoholic
(for now) :toast:
