Du'ers from cold states, can you SMELL snow in the air when snow is approaching?

Reason I asked is in a Hannah Swenson mystery she said her grandma could.

5. Yes, I can actually. Hard to describe, though. It's almost metallic to me. Weird, huh?

8. I don't know if it's an actual smell..
...as much as it is a sense. I can tell by the light in the sky and at the horizon.

9. I think so, it's a kind of sharpness...
Though I can't smell much right now, I have a sinus infection. :-(

10. there is a look to the sky, too ...
and I can't define that, either. It is the way the clouds and the light work together.

17. Yeah, this is the sign more than anything else to me
There's colors in the sky here that only show up in winter when we're about to have weather.

18. If you see a kind of ring around the moon
I think its ice crystals in the air and its usually a sign that some kind of wintry weather is coming soon...

12. Definitely. And I can usually tell what kind of snow it's going to be, too, by how the air smells.

A heavy, wet snow smells different than a sharp, gritty snow. Winter is as rich and varied as the other seasons -- if you live in a place that has four of them.

22. We called it that, but it's not really "smelling" snow but sensing the change in the humidity.

It's one of those marvelous little cues from nature.

the south.

27. Yes...and there is a 'feeling' to the air that helps to tell you...
that a weather change is coming. Our skin is sensitive to pressure/temp. changes.

Interesting question.

29. Every time. Very distinctive smell.
And when there is a drop in the air pressure before a rain, I can feel it in my knees.

30. Honestly? Yes, I can.
Grew up in CT and could smell it. Now here in VA, we're getting ready to get socked with about 2 feet. I can smell it in the air.

Weird. I know. But I've never been wrong.
