Help! My step-daughter's goldfish jumped out of it's bowl!
What should I do? I whacked it a few times with a rolled up newspaper but that didn't seem to help it at all. Any suggestions would be appreciated as it's laying there on the table looking at me.

2. The cat has been dead for over a year but I'll give it a try. Thanks!

I think the shovel is in the garage so it'll take me a few to dig up the cat.

6. It's time for a new cat. There are oh so many out there that need
a home. Give a home to one that otherwise would not get a home. The cat will appreciate it.
I don't know what to do about the fish.

4. pick it up and put it back in the bowl
Why would you whack it with a newspaper? It's not going to escape.

8. Fish is safe and happy
It actually jumped out of it's bowl a couple of days ago and landed on a newspaper that was next to the bowl. I put the fish back in the bowl. Told step-daughter that she can't fill the bowl right to the top lest "George" pulls another Steve McQueen in "The Great Escape".

11. I had this happen to a coworker a few years ago....poor fish jumped
out of it's bowl on a Friday evening after everyone had left. Coworker came back in on Monday to find a dead goldfish on her computer keyboard.

22. I've had it happen to a coworker, too.
They jumped clear out of their cubicle.

Like the OP, I whacked them with a rolled up newspaper a few times and tossed them back in.

14. My daughter's fish did this when she was little...
Naturally, I used it as a way to get her to be more aware

"I don't know what you are doing in here, but the fact your fish is trying to commit suicide may encourage you to clean your room a bit. Perhaps he doesn't like living in this pig pen"

I know. I'm evil... but in the end I made a perfect daughter :)

9. Well, it does seem that no one here is too sympathetic with this fish.
In my case that is categorization. I cannot categorize a fish as a pet. I do not categorize a fish as a pet.
I categorize them as food.
That is just me.

12. True. But reality is that you can go to any restaurant in the US and
order fish. In most locations you cannot legally or ethically do that with cat or dog.
Thus, I'm not really joking. I am itching to go for fish & chips for lunch.
Or Red Lobster for trout.
I think the joke is my avatar, a cat, they like to eat fish. My cat considers me a large cat.
But don't forget, you are the one what whacked the fish with the newspaper.
All of us can easily take the jokes about what we like to joke about. But about what we don't like to joke about (our president), we can't take the joke. It rankles the daylights out of me if people joke about our current president.
It's just the way it is.

13. Fish are friends. Not food.
I am a nice shark, not a mindless eating machine. If I am to change this image, I must first change myself.

if it's jumping out of the bowl too quickly. Or you can start the flush and then dump 'Goldie' in the bowl.
