Need help with finding a singer's name who won lottery

There was a guy, IIRC, who had auditioned unsuccessfully several times in his life, and then when he won a fairly large lottery, he went out and produced his own records with a portion of his winnings. I don't know how successful he was or anything, only that he didn't give a crap afterward about critics. Methinks he might have done an infomercial to get sales for his album.

Does that sound familiar to anyone? Funny thing, my mind is so filled with other things, I thought that's who Michael Buble was! I've been corrected, but maybe the guy I'm thinking of has a name similar to Buble's.
