Sherlock Holmes (trying to avoid spoilers)
Edited on Tue Dec-29-09 12:08 AM by JCMach1
Saw the Holmes reboot last night. I would give it kind of a mixed review

I liked:

-the mise en scene (dark sinister Victorian London) was done nicely
-Downey, Jr. is a fine actor whatever he is in... However, I would have probably shifted the character just a notch more to the cerebral and a notch down on the obsessive
-I liked the rethinking of Holmes and Watson... nicely done

I didn't like:
-Guy Ritchie really toned-down this film from his other work. It could have used more over the top dark humor.
-The villain (while a caricature of Alister Crowley) never really came off as all that sinister to me. I never really had any fear for any of the main characters because of this.

So, go see it.... But, keep in mind it's not your father's Sherlock Holmes. Also, if you don't like Guy Ritchie movies at all you will probably just be annoyed.

2. That's my favorite movie of the last decade.
I've already watched it about 30 times since it came out.

"Anything to declare?"

"Yeah, don't go to London."

Fucking Farina.

it's one of those rare movies where everyone in it, from the major stars to the bit players, are freaking PRICELESS :D

..I fucking lose it every time. That picture makes me laugh uncontrollably.

The DVD even has subtitles for the Pikey's. :)

"She's partial to the Periwinkle blue."

12. I donate plasma twice a week.
I usually bring a book but sometimes it does make me sleepy. They usually have the TV set to TBS and I've seen a lot more "Every Loves Raymond" then I ever intended to.

6. My wife and I are Holmes buffs, and we liked it
The fight scenes got a little tiresome, but I was surprised at how faithful it was overall to the Doyle Holmes. And RDJ and Law were very amusing and fun to watch.

7. I really enjoyed it ...

I thought it was more faithful to the Doyle Holmes than many of the more famous interpretations over the years. Holmes *was* a fairly manic obsessive, or at least that's how Watson viewed him, which is what matters.

It wasn't a perfect film, but it was highly entertaining. If you like Holmes anyway, I think it's a must-see.

9. Holmes is the first literary bipolar character I know of.
:)

Can't wait to see the movie. I love all incarnations of Holmes, and I have no troubles with a different take on the character.
