Shakespeare on Christmas
At Christmas I no more desire a rose,
Than wish a snow in May's new-fangled shows;
But like of each thing that in season grows.

-- Love's Labour Lost

Heigh Ho, The Holly

Blow, blow, thou winter wind,
Thou art not so unkind
As man's ingratitude;
Thy tooth is not so keen,
Because thou art not seen,
Although thy breath be rude.
Heigh ho, sing heigh ho, unto the green holly;
most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:
Then, heigh ho, the holly!
This life is most jolly.

Freeze, freeze, thou bitter sky,
That dost not bite so nigh
As benefits forgot:
Though thou the waters warp,
Thy sting is not so sharp
As friend remember'd not.
Heigh ho, sing heigh ho, unto the green holly:
most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:
Then, heigh ho, the holly!
This life is most jolly.

:hug: I serve ZombyCocoa on Christmas Eve. :D

(And keep some ZombyEggnog at the bar, of course)

Hey, is that not the most bitter Christmas poem ever? Billy wasn't one to suffer the holidays gladly, LOL.

3. Nope, no ZombyCocoa or ZombyEgnog for me this morning!
I'm already tanked up on caffeine. Anything with sugar in it would push me over the edge, I'm afraid. :rofl:

Yeah, ol' Bill was the life of the Christmas party, no doubt about it. :rofl:

4. love the melancholy and existential bard, thanks

we once saw a wonderful play about the battle of holly and ivy at a medieval music concert. Very cool. Love that kind of imagery.

8. do you follow the "who was Shakespeare" debate?
Edited on Thu Dec-24-09 11:00 PM by tigereye
kind of bizarre that folks insist that he could not have been a commoner, and that he had to be an educated aristocrat. Fascinating though.

Wonderful how long that these wonderful plays have delighted and challenged people.
