Ah, Tosca!
Watched a Met performance on PBS early this evening.

This is the most famous aria, by the wonderful Pavarotti, breaking his and our hearts.

e lucevan le stelle

4. Il Pagliacci and Nessum Dorma are certainly his signature arias
Watch, on Nessum Doram how he reaches the High C at the 2:54. I felt goose bumps

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VATmgtmR5o4

and the translation

Nobody shall sleep!...
Nobody shall sleep!
Even you, o Princess,
in your cold room,
watch the stars,
that tremble with love and with hope.
But my secret is hidden within me,
my name no one shall know...
No!...No!...
On your mouth I will tell it when the light shines.
And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!...
(No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.)
Vanish, o night!
Set, stars! Set, stars!
At dawn, I will win! I will win! I will win!

And the famous Vesti La Giubba - I Pagliacci

5. Here in Los Angeles we hear Nessun Dorma all the time, so I
have had way too much of it.
I liked Roberto Alagna singing Pagliacci. In the title role. I liked him much better than Pavy.
Something different, you know.
Angela, his wife, was soprano.

Makes me think of Quantum of Solace.
