I'd pick Ebbets Field. Those old pictures make it seem so beautiful.

1. Forbes Field, Pittsburgh
Edited on Sun Dec-13-09 04:18 PM by Richardo
Complete with the batting cage stored at the 457' mark in dead center field, the flagpole and the light standards all within the field of play.

Got to see the Bucs play the expansion club San Diego Padres there in 1969 - its last full season.

12. It's cool to stand at the home plate inside the classroom building at the University of Pittsburgh
Babe Ruth hit his last homerun ever standing at that home plate.

They've also outlined the outfield dimensions along the street, and they have the piece of wall where Mazeroski's homerun went over the fence still standing.

13. I grew up a five minute walk from Forbes.
Saw many a game there as a kid. It was a sad day when they moved to Three Rivers.

7. Wonder hjow the modern hitters would handle the Polo Grounds.
What was it, 500' in deep center?

8. You could have a football game in Forbes' center field and it wouldn't affect the baseball game
Edited on Mon Dec-14-09 11:13 AM by Richardo
Ironically, Forbes was something of a hitter's park because the outfield was SO vast that it was difficult for the fielders to cover all that territory. Except for Clemente.

PS: Wiki says Polo Grounds was 483' to center.

9. yeah, 490-something.... but the distance down the foul lines was very short...
i imagine there were a lot of inside-the-park HRs if the outfielders were caught out of position..

16. Gosh, Redstone, I was going to post exactly the same answer!
My family moved to Philly from North Dakota (yes, North Dakota) when I was 5. My parents, mad for baseball, took me to a night game virtually the first night in town.
I remember the astonishing sound that the crowd made in that park., something to do with the amphitheater shape of the place. I fell asleep, very happy.
